Bonds of Blood and Honor

Jelena is a fiery castanic warrior guarding a lonely pass at the frontlines of a war for the survival of her world. She goes to the rescue of Elleon, a high elf officer, and fights at his side to defeat their enemies.

Elleon orders Jelena to accompany him on his mission to enemy territory. Together they penetrate the twisted domain of the argons—the mechanized invaders who threaten to destroy all life—and establish mutual loyalty and fierce rivalry as they battle argon foes and reanimated horrors to discover the truth at the heart of the invasion threatening their existence.

But Jelena is a loner, and she likes it that way. When their task is done, will they go their separate ways? Or will the mutual respect and attraction between them lead toward a new future together?

Set in the world of the next-generation online role-playing game TERA™, “Fire and Ice” combines the thrill of battle with the epic clash of two potent personalities in a landscape of total annihilation.

This action novelette by R.K. MacPherson is a great way for readers to experience the world of TERA.

TERA Fire and Ice Review
By Haynes Z
The story itself looks like an excerpt from Leander's brother in the story line of TERA. As a fan of the game series I enjoyed being able to recognize the words and ways of the game and it fit well into the story. The author did a good job conveying the world as the denizens themselves would see it.
The story itself did well in showing the lore and using what we know to spin a tale of might and magic without being over the top and reducing the hero and heroine into bland, dull, super-beings that could do anything they pleased. It fit in well with the series and is definitely worth the read for any fans. The characters were well-explained, even with the quick introduction and limited space the author had to work with.
While it's worth taking a look at for anyone willing to read it, this is not a Jack London or Mark Danielewski book. There are little 'blurbs' in the writing that could use some work ("She backflipped... came up in a guard position"), and repeated words that seem to hurry the scene along rather than transition from one point to another. The only time I frowned was when (I'm not spoiling anything) a physical condition didn't seem to alter the flow of action at all, which in reality, would have drastically affected the character in question once you learn about it.
In short the characters aren't bad, the action is present and a bit of story for anyone interested in the lore. While it has drawbacks it's a good read for anyone familiar with the franchise and wants a brief glimpse into the world of TERA. Don't take my word for it, it was well worth the Washington to pass time.

An enjoyable action-oriented story
By Thomas Kurtz
In terms of someone new to the game, this read was more about observing the chemistry between two strangers with a healthy dose of stealthy action stirred in for good measure. But with an eye toward the higher levels of TERA, to understand how the Argon work is a useful insight toward someone who enjoys the story and likes to roleplay in MMOs.

A Lil' Nugget of Character Development!
By Kaitlyn
To put it simply; I like it.

I've been playing Tera on-and-off for a while now, and knew that there were E-Books, and thought I'd throw the author and Enmasse another little chunk of my soul to see how it turned out.

Fire and Ice is basically the story of how Elleon Kubel, and Jelena, two main npc's from the games main story, meet and become comrades. It was interesting to see the two interact with each other, and have their hinted-at personalities in-game expanded upon. It certainly has added an extra layer of depth when I find myself grinding off to reach the top-levels and I run into either of them.

The only two draw-backs I had with this title was that it was... A little short. I know it was meant to be, but I couldn't help but let out a sad "awww" when it ended. Ah, I'll merely have to hope for more. Who knows, maybe I'll find out more about Leander in the next one?
The second draw-back, also not really a problem so much as it is me being picky; I wouldn't be able to recommend it to anyone outside of the Tera fandom. The book is heavily steeped in in-game lore, which is very refreshing considering how wonky the lore CAN be, and how well it worked in the series. Anyone who doesn't play would be lost in the dust, which makes me feel like MacPherson could have, and should have had more personal liberties in adapting the story to make it a little bit different from the game.

But all in all, I was pleased with what I got.
I loved how Elleon, though he could be formal, had personality, and kept his characteristically hyperactive traits. I loved How sassy Jelena was, and how the two meshed together, despite their very obvious rank-difference.

If you play Tera, and you want to know about EITHER of them; then yes. This little nugget o'character development would be well-worth the read.

Nice, short book to make yourself familiar with Pythonic syntaxes
By Amazon Customer
"Writing Idiomatic Python 3" attempts to uncover the elegance of Python3 syntax; what programmers call 'Pythonic code'.
Python has plethora of cool ways to trim down and beautify code. This book deals with them one by one.

What I liked:
I learned a lot of "hidden" features..well, hidden for beginners/intermediate users at least, some of which follow:
- Use of iterable to avoid repetition of value comparison. Sample: if name in ('Tom', 'Dick', 'Harry')
- Use of enumerate() function to eliminate maintenance of an explicit index variable in a loop.
- * operator to represent "rest" of a list while unpacking it.
- Along the same line of unpacking, use of '_' as a placeholder to ignore an unpacked value.
- Clever use of set to eliminate duplicate entries from an Iterable.
- Swiss knife for Iterables: itertools module

What I disliked:
I object against avoiding explicit comparison to None. Agreed, the author has pointed out an exception where one should explicitly compare with None. However, I find it safer to be consistent.
Also, I find it a bit aggressive to use the title "Harmful" in order to depict the non-recommended code sample. I would rather prefer terms "Pythonic" and "UnPythonic".

Who should read this book?
This is a must-read book for people who are acquainted with Python. Complete beginners, however, might find it difficult to keep their heads above water. It kind of hangs in between post-beginner and advanced levels.
I would strongly recommend this book to the Java/c# immigrants. With such a short Pythonic reference in hand, they should feel themselves at home.
Even those who have been writing in Python since long, but are still unaware of Pythonic style of writing code, could find this book an enlightening read.

Great book for any Python developer!
By Daniel Roy Greenfeld
First of all, this book isn't a tutorial. If you want to get up to speed on Python I recommend Learn Python the Hard Way, 3rd edition, Python In A Day, or Learning Python, 5th Edition. Once you get a basic understanding of Python, this book will suddenly come alive in usefulness.

The author goes over an amazing number of idioms, but in a way that isn't tiring and serves as a great reference. I've programmed in Python since 2005, yet in reading this book I discovered a few things about Python as well some handy tricks to clarify my code. Each chapter, section, or subsection includes both harmful and idiomatic (good) examples displayed in very legible, highlighted code. Also, there are page breaks between each chapter, section, and subsection, making it even easier to reference. For teams and projects, this book can readily serve as an easily reference coding guide. I know because I've been on, or heard about projects where we used it in this capacity.

The book is just pure text and code. Wise move! Books should either have good art or no art. Good or amusing art in a technical book breaks up dense content or reinforces a message, whereas low quality or tacky art distracts the reader and diminishes the entire work.

The only possibly issue I have is the author's preference for absolute over relative arguments in subsection 3.3.2. It's a tiny, tiny issue that depends on your project and use case, so please don't get hung up on it.

All in all, I heartily recommend this book. The price is worth it, and the cleaner code you write will make the book pay for itself in the improved productive of you and your team.

Great eBook
By Karthz
This is a must buy book for all Python developers - new or experienced.

I got the book with the preorder discount from the author's website. (Both 2.7 and 3.3 - pdf & epub versions for $12.99). It's a great deal and I'm very happy with it, as a new Python developer, coming from a Java environment.

The stately calm of a Washington morning is shattered when a group of terrorists descends, killing dozens and taking nearly one hundred hostages as they massacre their way into the White House. The Secret Service evacuates the president to an underground bunker—and while officials argue over how to negotiate with the enemy, Mitch Rapp, the CIA’s top counterterrorism operative, moves stealthily among the hidden corridors and secret passageways of the executive mansion, to save the hostages before the terrorists reach the president. But another adversary—someone within Washington’s elite—is determined to see Rapp’s rescue mission fail.

Real. Imaginative, Powerful, Well written; I could go on...A MUST READ!
By johnfcon
I've been thrilled to "discover" this writer. As technical as Clancy et al, and certainly a student of the machinations of the power structure of our Government. Too bad it's fiction, because we certainly need some real solutions to the problems we've been facing for several administrations. However, if I may dissemble: while dusting the household library shelves the other day, I ran across my 1971 hard cover edition of "Day of the Jackal". Do not confuse the writings of Frederick Forsyth with any of the film adaptations. This is a book for the ages, and has certainly influenced a great number of writers to examine the political intrigues of their nations and periods of history. I feel that Flynn has assumed the mantle woven by Forsyth, and graciously carried it into our present age and location. This is not plagiarism, this is a living tribute to the types and art of excellent writing. I love this series of books, and admire the agility, dexterity and imagination of the writer(s). There are very few writers on my "5 Star" list, these make the cut, and I feel that they will stand the test of time. Thanks for listening to my musings.

The birth of the Mitch Rapp series is a winner
By Thomas Moody
Regrettably discovering Vince Flynn’s remarkable ability in this national political thriller genre only this year, it’s now become my devoted intent to voraciously read each novel in his catalogue. “Transfer of Power,” the second novel following his amazing debut “Term Limits,” introduces us to Mitch Rapp, a beyond tough covert operative who possesses a seemingly infinite number of self-defense and militarily trained weapons and skills, as Flynn’s main protagonist. With the overwhelming success of the Rapp character, Flynn devotes an entire series of like novels with Rapp becoming the primary combatant. This formula is what Flynn followed with great triumph throughout the body of his work before he tragically succumbed to prostate cancer in 2013.

In each of these marvelous works (this one is from 1999), Rapp takes on the many insidious characters on near suicidal missions that would threaten the United States. In reading this (and in his first work Term Limits), I find it very clear that Flynn was an unconditional patriot, right wing conservative who believed in the doctrine of overwhelming force as the only true means to enforce America’s foreign policy issues and that diplomacy was just time wasted by government bureaucrats, time needed and better spent on overpowering our enemies with the consummate force possessed by the United States (please pardon the digression into the political realm...it is relevant here I feel because Flynn's books are so heavily biased in this direction that prospective readers should be aware).

This book, “Transfer of Power” is political and military intrigue at its best. A well-known and long hunted senior Iraqi terrorist cleverly disguises himself as an Egyptian Prince who then manages to ingratiate himself with a Democratic PAC leader, the party that had recently elected Robert Hayes as President. Executing his detailed and well subsidized plan, the Prince is actually Rafique Aziz, a special target for CIA operative Mitch Rapp. As the plan unfolds, Aziz and his men overcome the staunch White House security and gain control of both the mansion and the West Wing. By the sheer luck of a last minute discovery by Rapp, who uses the sobriquet Mitch Ruse to keep his clandestine identity secret, President Hayes is saved and quickly escorted to the White House secure bunker…secure they think.

With Aziz now in command of the entire executive mansion and West Wing, along with a host of hostages that didn’t make it out during the violent overtaking, he presents a list demands that if aren’t met, he’ll sacrifice hostages and ultimately detonate both buildings, killing all the remaining people in the structures, including himself, while leveling perhaps the most symbolic landmark in American history. This is where we find Flynn at his best…weaving multiple storylines, each with their own unique personae and dramatic occurrences, while brilliantly carrying the reader through many heart-stopping episodes as we converge on a breathtaking conclusion.

Leaving Rapp as the hero, of course, and extricating him quickly from the post event back slapping among the CIA and FBI, we're immediately set up for the next installment in the Rapp series, one which he is sure to continue to chase down bad guys while protecting American interests both domestically and abroad.

Most readers will undoubtedly find themselves having a very difficult time putting this down...Flynn's ability to balance multiple scenes and leave the reader hanging for more is superb. At nearly 600 pages I believe some readers might be intimidated by the size or the commitment but, trust me, if you are even a fringe fan of this genre, this work will literally fly by. I'm a slow reader and I took this in in only two weeks. I'm thinking most would devour it in much less time.

If there is any critique to be made, Flynn oftentimes loses the reader with the logistics of the White House inner/under architecture. Multiple tunnels, basements, secret doors leading to other secret tunnels quickly overwhelm and leave us mystified as to where everyone is actually located…and this criticism is from someone who’s actually researched the inner layout of both the mansion and the West Wing. I will say though that in Flynn's defense, an understanding where each of our characters are located at each moment ultimately plays little consequence in the end…it was just very troublesome for me along the way.

But with that minor criticism aside, I would still whole-heartedly recommend this work to any fan of this genre. Although not having much experience yet with Tom Clancy (I am only now about half way through The Hunt for Red October), I feel qualified enough to say without doubt that Flynn far outdistances Clancy at this comparable point in their literary careers. Ultimately, it will be my great literary pleasure to continue the comparison of these genre monoliths as I continue to take on their great action novels.

By Ian N.
I've been looking for fun spy action adventure reading and these books seem well liked. This is the third book in the series that I've read, as I started with the prequel series. I think this is my least favorite of the books, but that could be because it was the first of the series and Vince Flynn hadn't found his legs yet. The book is pretty predictable and the author has a pretty open disdain for politicians, college intellectuals, and bureaucrats that aren't in the secret services. I understand that it's a pretty typical trope that the hero has to work against the incompetence of the system while defeating the bad guys in his own way, but this reaches levels of eye rolling stupidity. Several of these characters are so nakedly incompetent and irrational that they never could have risen to such levels of power and that is with the understanding of the current levels of incompetence in our government. If you are looking for a fun spy thriller that doesn't rely so heavily on such tropes, check out Red Sparrow.

We Should Hang Out Sometime: Embarrassingly, a true story, by Josh Sundquist

When I was twenty-five years old, it came to my attention that I had never had a girlfriend. At the time, I was actually under the impression that I was in a relationship, so this bit of news came as something of a shock.
Why was Josh still single? To find out, he tracked down each of the girls he had tried to date since middle school and asked them straight up: What went wrong?
The results of Josh's semiscientific investigation are in your hands. From a disastrous Putt-Putt date involving a backward prosthetic foot, to his introduction to CFD (Close Fast Dancing), and a misguided "grand gesture" at a Miss America pageant, this story is about looking for love--or at least a girlfriend--in all the wrong places.
Poignant, relatable, and totally hilarious, this memoir is for anyone who has ever wondered, "Is there something wrong with me?"
(Spoiler Alert: the answer is no.)

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Sundquist, a motivational speaker, author, and Paralympic ski racer (he lost his left leg to Ewing's sarcoma at age nine), has had terrible luck with the ladies. In this laugh-out-loud memoir, he attempts to figure out why he can't catch a break, exploring the matter scientifically by analyzing and hypothesizing about each of his failed relationships, starting with his first girlfriend in the eighth grade. Sundquist tracks down the various women he's dated and interviews them to test his hypotheses. Each section of the book is dedicated to a different girlfriend and time period in Josh's life. His various theories are often illustrated through hilarious charts and graphs, adding to the lab report feel of the book. This is a unique, earnest, and funny coming-of-age story about Sundquist's experiences as a cancer survivor, amputee, Paralympic ski racer, and motivational speaker. Readers will appreciate the humorous and often embarrassingly accurate tales depicted in the pages of this book.—Annalise Ammer, City of Rochester Public Libraries, NY

"You should read this book sometime. I loved it so much."―Justine Ezarik, New York Times bestselling author of I, Justine: An Analog Memoir

"Sundquist is a storyteller--flawed, wry, laid-back and sympathetic. Anyone who's felt awkward will alternately (or simultaneously) wince and burst out laughing at his earnest misadventures with stalkers, "Close Fast Dancing" and flow charts... but above all, they'll be rooting for Sundquist to hang out with a girl. Funny, sympathetic and poignant, Sundquist's memoir has a high probability of success."―Kirkus Reviews

"[A] laugh-out-loud memoir...This is a unique, earnest, and funny coming-of-age story about Sundquist's experiences as a cancer survivor, amputee, Paralympic ski racer, and motivational speaker. Readers will appreciate the humorous and often embarrassingly accurate tales depicted in the pages of this book."―SLJ

"An autobiographical account that's equal parts hilarious and cringe-inducing...While his recent interviews and meetings with the girls from his past are often just as uncomfortable as their dates were, they also lead to answers as genuine as his narrative."―Publishers Weekly

"Josh's voice is engaging and conversational, and readers will relate as they laugh along at his misadventures. From a disastrous putt-putt date to just general, suffusing awkwardness, Josh (who grew up to be a Paralympic ski racer) discovers that revisiting the past can be both embarrassing and enlightening. Irresistible fun."―Booklist

"[Sundquist's] findings are illuminating for anyone who has experienced social awkwardness in the field of attraction...and his gift for encouragement shines forcefully from his final chapters, where he assesses what went wrong and relates how he has used his new self-awareness to find love. Readers familiar with Sundquist's website and YouTube channel will be a natural audience for this."―The Bulletin

"Sundquist has written a compelling memoir, to which teens will be able to relate, as it probes the universal insecurities of teen dating."―School Library Connection

"Often hilarious, occasionally awkward, and always hopeful, Josh's quest for love will have readers rooting for him all the way."―Jennifer E. Smith, author of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and The Geography of You and Me

"Josh Sundquist has written a sharp, funny memoir without an ounce of self-pity about how the fear of rejection can be far more crippling than any disease. A hilarious, heartfelt reminder that finding the courage to accept love is an inside job."―Aaron Hartzler, author of Rapture Practice

Nobody's perfect, not even the handicapped
By Whistlers Mom
This book is marked as an "Amazon Best Seller!" It's the #1 best selling book on Amazon in its category, which is "Books > Teens > Personal Health > Physical Impairments." I don't know how many books there ARE in that category, but I'm guessing not a lot. And that really explains what I liked and didn't like about this book.

This young man survived a horrifying bout of childhood cancer which resulted in one of his legs being amputated at the hip. As he explains, this is a severe physical impairment because no prosthetic device ever invented can replace the actions of three joints. Eventually the problem solved itself because his body rejected the prosthesis and he's now limited to crutches.

I think the author intended his story to be both entertaining and educational and I think he succeeds. This book forces the reader to examine America's strange attitude toward the physically handicapped. On the one hand, we don't see being physically handicapped as a GOOD thing. We certainly wouldn't want to be physically handicapped ourselves or for any of our loved ones to be physically handicapped. On the other hand, we don't want to look shallow and unsympathetic.

We compromise by elevating the handicapped to the status of semi-sainthood. A handicapped person is automatically a "hero" because he/she has a handicap and keeps going. (Like they have a choice?) We like to hear from the handicapped and we like to pat them on the back because it makes us feel good about ourselves. We love that we don't have to feel sorry for them because they're brave and unselfish and plucky and all the stuff that the rest of us aren't and don't want to be. Attending their motivational speeches and cheering loudly solves the problem of our ambivalent attitudes toward the "differently-abled." Then we can forget about them. We're off the hook.

This intelligent, articulate young man keeps making the point that the loss of a limb doesn't really make you fundamentally any different from everyone else. And he's absolutely correct and his approach to women proves it. His love life (or lack of one) has little to do with his missing leg and everything to do with being raised by two loving, earnest, well-meaning people whose child-rearing methods left him ill-equipped to function in the modern world. In a culture where youngsters hook-up and hope that sex will lead to romance, he's feeling guilty for THINKING about kissing a girl. He's looking for a 1950's girl and he's 60 years too late.

This book is quirky and some shy teens may relate to his stories of awkward attempts to find romance. Most of his stories are run-of-the-mill tales of growing up. However, the story about the time when the foot of his prosthesis turned backwards was unique. I have to admit, I never read anything quite like that one before. And he tells his stories very well.

The take-away lesson is: Stop burdening this man by expecting him to be a super-hero. Stop gushing because he made a speech with jokes and he only has ONE LEG! Stop being amazed because he wrote a book and he only has ONE LEG! Do you see how silly you sound?

He's a normal, shallow, self-centered young guy and he wants what every other normal, shallow, self-centered young guy wants - a babe. That's what he goes after and he's not settling for less. Hence his reaction to "Stella the Stalker."

Finally a girl is interested in him. Maybe a bit TOO interested, but interested. And he tells her to get lost. He freely admits that Stella's sin is not that she's weird, but that she's ugly. If she had been one of the hot babes he covets, her stalking would have been delightful.

Finally he meets a beauty queen who was also home-schooled and they walk off into the sunset. Stella wasn't his problem and I'm not unreasonable enough to think he could have made a huge difference in her life. He could have shown her some kindness, but maybe that's expecting too much of a young man. Anyway, he didn't.

Just because something extraordinary (good or bad) has happened to you doesn't mean that you become an extraordinary person. You have to do that yourself. Maybe the author and his beauty queen girlfriend will marry. Maybe one of their children will be a Stella. Maybe loving an imperfect child and advocating for her and hurting when she hurts will turn him into the hero that his audiences want to believe he is now.

This is a teen book and a teen would react to it far differently than I did. Still, I'm glad I read it. I didn't fall in love with the guy, but he made me think.

A Good Bookshelf Book
By mwayne
It was an easy read, and broken down into very manageable parts (if you like to read a section and then put it down for awhile). I'm the type of person who rates a book 5-stars if I'd actually read it again; 4-stars if I keep it around and would consider reading it again but probably won't; 3-stars if I don't want to read it again, but I'll keep it around on my bookshelf; 2-stars if I finished it but will donate it because it wasn't worth keeping on the bookshelf; and finally 1-star if I won't finish it. This is definitely a book I'll keep around, maybe loan it to a friend and not be concerned if I never get it back.

Laugh and cringe at Josh's dating misadventures
By CathyGK
Laugh out loud funny. I always root for the underdog so I really enjoyed these painfully funny scenarios. Josh Sundquist has been writing for Daily Guideposts for years and it was a treat to read a more extensive work. My only disappointment was that I thought the present-day encounters with past potential girlfriends did not bring as much "closure" as I had hoped. A great read for twenty-somethings and "boomers" who might have adult kids this age.
