About the Author
Dr. Robert Spinner is a neurosurgeon in Rochester, Minnesota. He is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic - Saint Marys Hospital. He received his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and has been in practice for 25 years. He is one of 17 doctors at Mayo Clinic and one of 13 at Mayo Clinic - Saint Marys Hospital who specialize in Neurological Surgery.

About the Author

Raul D.S.G. Campilho was born in 1979. In 2003, he graduated with a college degree in mechanical engineering at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Portugal. He completed his M.Sc. degree in 2006 and his Ph.D. degree in 2009, both of which at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. Campilho currently serves as an assistant professor at ISEP, where he teaches mechanical engineering. He is an active researcher in numerical modeling, finite element methods, cohesive zone models for fracture behavior, natural and artificial composite materials, and adhesive joint design.

One of the central figures in modern landscape architecture, Garrett Eckbo (1910-2000) was a major influence in the field during an active career spanning five decades. While most of the early American designers concentrated on the private garden and the corporate landscape, Eckbo's work demonstrated innovative design ideas in a social setting. This engagement with social improvement has stayed with Eckbo throughout his life, distinguishing both his intentions and achievements, from his early work for the Farm Security Administration to his partnerships (including one of the most prominent landscape firms in the world, Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams—EDAW) and his years as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

In an elegant and detailed book that includes more than 100 of Eckbo's designs, Marc Treib examines the aesthetic formation of Eckbo's manner, and by implication the broader field of landscape architecture since the 1930s. Dorothée Imbert writes about Eckbo's social vision, including his belief that ultimately, landscape design is the "arrangement of environments for people." The book also contains a biographical and professional chronology and a complete bibliography of publications by and about Garrett Eckbo.

Careful and profound theology of worship.

Warren Wiersbe has done what few other writers on this subject have been able to accomplish: he has actually reviewed what the Scriptures teach about worship and presented it in a way which is both insightful and practical. The heart of Wiersbe's book is that worship is not about singing and praise, but raither is an expression of a relationship of love with God. What a marvelous insight into the real biblical doctrine of worship!

Great Book for CS Concepts

Love this book - even though it is fairly old (in Computer Science years) it is still relevant. It covers many of the CS concepts we take for granted today.

I will say - it is not for the layman. I think you would have to have a CS background, or at least a good math background to grasp many of the concepts.

From 6 to 666 hours to understand

What you get out of the book depends upon how much you want to put into in. A reader of this book, could decide to just understand the general ideas, follow the detailed mathematics, or perhaps program on a computer (for example sorting routines, hashing and the like). Each of the excursions is well covered, sometimes witty, but at times I got bogged-down in the symbols. The chapter on "analog computation" coming in the middle of a book was a welcome relief presenting ideas of sorting, shortest path and minimum trees using spaghetti and strings without mathematics (and would be a good chapter to give to non-computer science friends if they ever make the mistake of asking you what sort of problems you think about). The chapter on neural networks, I thought was also clear. There are also some of the classic computer science problems presented such as the Tower of Hanoi, or "A man ponders how to ferry a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage across of river".

The 66 excursions cover a lot of ground, but often return to Turing machines, finite-state machines, and NP-completeness problems. I might have enjoyed more on algorithm analysis, computer languages, and game analysis. Additionally there are new topics since this 1992 publication, such as quantum computing, Bioinformatics, Internet related topics on virus and encrypting, and a raft of social questions including privacy. I hope the "Turing omnibus" refuels for another update.

Little cohesion, random thoughts no real level (advanced or novice)

There are some interesting tidbits here, but you have to wade through a lot to get to them. Also, it is obvious the book is just a bunch of articles pasted together, and there is not rhyme nor reason as to their order. I found some interesting algorithms, but the writing itself and explanations are bland and at times quite confusing to me who has worked as a software developer in the IT industry for 20 years. Many of these also feel outdated. If it were cleaned up, updated and explanations made more clear then the book might be worth the money, until then, try Code by Charles Petzold, you'll get a lot more from that book.
