I know 3 of the contributors to this book and can't wait to read the stories from each of the other 12 also. I'll know that when I read these stories, they are true and will come from the heart (based on my personal connection with Rob, Christopher & Isabel). I just know that Winding Road to Freedom: 15 Entrepreneurs Share Their Journey to Financial Freedom will make a difference to you if you are in a business of your own or simply at the beginning stages of thinking about it. OK, now that I've bought my own copy, I'd best hop in and read it. I'll return to update my review after reading this little gem. A book with solid strategies and advice every aspiring Entrepereur needs to read!

As an Authorpreneur, I found the stories in this compilation of entrepreneurs to be very inspiring. With names such as Rob Cubbon, Patrick King, Derek Doepker, Bryan Cohen, Henry Juntilla and many more, you can’t help but be driven to succeed yourself as an entrepreneur who makes a living doing what they love.

In this book, Winding Road to Freedom, the authors share their individual stories of success, failures and what it takes to make it in the entrepreneurial biz. The contributing authors share personal stories of hard work, obstacles and…more hard work to get to the place in their career where they could safely break away from the normal 9-5 grind.

If you are an aspiring author/business/outsourcer or want to run your own business, take a look at this book and learn the lessons from the people who are already there. With the strategies and practices the authors share, it makes this book worth the time and investment.

Realistic inspiration.

Winding Road to Freedom was filled with very different entrepreneurs sharing their stories. I only knew three of them before this book, the rest were new to me. My takeaway was that success for all of them wasn't a straight line nor overnight. It took time and twists and turns none of them expected.
My favorite passage in the book was from Paige Burkes: "If you're not sure what to do next, just do something- anything. Action brings learning and more actions. It doesn't matter which direction you choose."
This is a book to read for realistic inspiration to make strides forward in your journey.

The best, most-honored Irish poet of the generation after Heaney, "the man who could rhyme knife with fork" (as another poet quipped), Muldoon finds his collected work seeing print a few months before his 50th birthday not bad for a farmer's son from Armagh. Though it includes no new poems, this big brick of a volume does make available several long-out-of-print early books, and it serves better than Muldoon's older selecteds to reveal the full range of his prodigious talents. There is the Frostian, anecdotal Muldoon of early work like "The Big House": "I was only the girl under the stairs/ But I was the first to notice something was wrong." There is the evasive, tough-guy Muldoon who wrote narrative poems, like "The More a Man Has the More a Man Wants," about terror and gangsters in his native Ulster. There is the brilliantly canny and understatedly moving family elegist. There is the Muldoon whose oeuvre includes all shades of romantic and erotic emotion, from sexual disgust ("Aisling") to long-married tenderness ("Long Finish"). There is the writer of serious, terse, effective political verse, the author of 100 haiku about suburban New Jersey, and the Muldoon who recreated the sonnet in his own image. And, most famously, there is the postmodern comic, who claims to be "my own stunt double," and who explains in another recent poem: "A bird in the hand is better than no bread./ To have your cake is to pay Paul." Muldoon (who now teaches at Princeton and Oxford) may yet expand his range even further; for now, the Muldoons are all here, in force and in bulk. Most readers of poetry will need to deal with them. (Apr.) Forecast: The eight or so separate Muldoon volumes on the shelves had the effect of putting off first-time readers, and making a diverse body of work seem diffuse. This collection corrects both problems, and makes Muldoon's first half-century a one-shot buy for libraries and consumers alike. Carlos Fuentes claims the English language's luck consists of someone Irish coming along every generation or so and reinventing it. Muldoon--reared in Northern Ireland, long resident at Princeton, recently professor of poetry at Oxford--is today's reinventor. His language is heightened, experimental, and also utterly mundane, even coarse. His subjects match the language, what with trips on mescaline chockablock with bucolic landscapes. The luck of this collection is that it is long and dense enough to show the poet wrestling not only with craft--his intricate and often hidden rhymes show, right from the start, his obsession with form--but also with the reason for poetry in a technological age. In an early poem Muldoon describes meeting with a younger poet "rambling on / About pigs and trees, stars and horses"--this is Muldoon's own younger self come calling, challenging him to move beyond the conventional poetic subjects. The trees and stars never utterly disappear, though, but arrive in movies and French philosophy, pub crawls and Romantic poets, Irish language and Belfast murders, in a great swirl of fresh and durable language, as if they were bedrock revealed by a cataclysm. Glibly Great~Greatly Glib

If glibness can be elevated to greatness, then (as critics like to say), Muldoon has no peer. But that's a big "if". I picked up this volume based on a recent New York Times article where I read that (just in case you haven't heard yet) he is a Professor of Poetry at both Oxford and Princeton, having been inducted into the former at the tender age of 20. Surely, dear reader, you must know by now the unparalleled list of professorial poets produced by Oxford & Princeton? Need I name names?
I nevertheless like Pual Muldoon's poetry. I recommend it and it's fun to read, but his book of poems from 1968-1998 could hardly be considered a string of pearls.
What you will and won't get.
His is like snapshot poetry. Don't expect extended metaphor, conceits, or any overall development in the way of imagery or narrative. His is a quick wit and quick eye. Reading his poem is like setting fire to a box of matches. There's no smoldering pathos hear. His fire leaps from matchtip to matchtip, word to word, until the whole of it goes up in an exciting little burst of flames.
His poetry has been compared to Donne, but similarities are thin. For example, Donne was singularly known for the difficulty of his metrical writing. Expect no metrical daring from Muldoon. He doesn't write by numbers. Muldoon's difficulty can be summed up, I think, by this tidy comparison. Reading Muldoon is like listening to someone else's phone conversation. You will only ever hear half the conversation.
The earlier books in this collected poems are the most accessible and, in certain ways, the more enjoyable. You'll find those matchtip lines like: "Once you swallowed a radar-blip/of peyote/you were out of your tree..." This makes for fun reading.
The book "Madoc: A Mystery", however, dating from 1990 indulges in a stellar example of poetic onanism. Clearly, the writing of Madoc brought great pleasure to the author, but I personally doubt this book will mean much to anyone not having a fetish for erudite cleverness. Clearly, the Princetion professor Muldoon is having a long distance conversation with his Oxford counterpart. You will have to wiretap if you really want to get this stuff. For example:

"It transpires that Bucephalus is even now
"pumping jet
"of spunk into the rowdy-dow-dow
"of some hoity-toity little skewbald jade."
Get it? If you do, this bud is for you.
The final book "Hay", is the best of them. Even if a portion of the poems strike one as little more than deliciously worded doggerel, the fun of Muldoon's wit evens the whole of it out. "I've upset the pail/in which my daughter had kept/her five-`No, six'-snails." Substitute "reader" for "daughter" and you get the idea.
By the way, did you know he was professor of poetry at Princeton AND Oxford???

I love Paul Muldoon...

...I really do. The common criticism of Muldoon is that his constant use of mythical/literary allusion and Irish colloquial vocabulary makes him very difficult (if not impossible) to understand. I would argue, however, that this is Muldoon's point, especially in regards to his many elegies. Muldoon himself cannot access and express the depth of his mourning, and the diffult language he exposes the reader to assures that his feeling of insufficiency is not lost on anyone else. In my view, this is a brilliant and beautiful approach to modern elegy.
All of that being said, it is impossible not to get lost in Muldoon's beautiful language and rhythm. Reading even one verse of a Muldoon poem can keep me going for a whole day. Don't read him if you're afraid of doing a little thinking, but keep in mind that not all of his allusions are meant to be understood. Just enjoy.

A Poet of the First Order

I first encountered Paul Muldoon when he came to my university to give a reading and a seminar talk. When I picked up a photocopied packet of his poems and started to read through them, I was confused, then intrigued, then thrilled. When Muldoon arrived a few days later for the poetry reading and the seminar discussion, I was further impressed by this wonderful man, who has a deep understanding of poetry and language.
These poems are not "easy". Many of them require multiple readings to begin to understand them (although some are quite straightforward, but these are rare). However, Muldoon's use of language, his sense for sounds, his near-obsession with rhyme, and his inventiveness are qualities so far above most other contemporary poets that, well, what can I say? He's the real thing. Today, like Geoffrey Hill, he's very well regarded in the UK, and virtually unknown in the USA. This is tragic. A century from now, the names of Hill and Muldoon will be known, and most US poets will be forgotten - but that's another topic.
If you like difficult but beautiful poetry, pick this up. If you are into pretty easy, conversational verse that you can grasp from a first reading - stay away!

Astrophotography with Reeves

If you are thinking of trying astrophotography, this is an excellent place to start. Reeves covers the basics of using inexpensive webcams to produce great images with modest telescopes and the basics of using digital cameras (both DSLR and fixed lens) with or without a telescope. I have used a variety of his techniques and they work. For example, using a inexpensive Canon A60 to produce better moon photos than I could achieve in the old film days and taking constellation photos in less than 30 seconds with a DSLR on a tripod. If you follow the webcam instructions you will be amazed at the results. Reeves covers all the basics and covers them very well indeed.

DO NOT PURCHASE

This book is full of grammatical mistakes, typos, formatting problems, broken English, and nonsensical sentences from start to finish (quite literally - the header on every single page in the text says "Beginners For Analytics Data Big"). Quite simply, it does not appear that the authors ever once: (A) read through the text after they typed it the first time; or (B) ever bothered to have the book read by an editor (or really anyone). Do not waste your money.

Topics are OK but with lot of grammar errors!

Pros: This book in general provide nice overview of big data landscape and its clear that authors understand what they are talking about.

Cons: The biggest problem are typos, grammar errors and material is definitely not grouped and organized as it should be. This makes content very hard to follow. Unfortunately this problem decrease value of the book big time.

Not his most widely known book, but exceptional nonetheless

Another one of Ernest Holme's shorter books, It's up to You, comes in at just over 90 pages (my edition does not seem to come up on this website) and it seems to be one of the lesser known books written by Holmes; nevertheless, I enjoyed it as much as his earlier book, Creative Mind and Success (previously reviewed on this website).

The main theme in this book is once again that our thoughts are real, powerful and they are the creative force in our lives: this force connects us to the entire universe. "There is nothing which we see in the entire universe, whether it be a tree, a stove, a man, or a bird, other than a thought objectified. It could not be there if it were not made out of Mind, for that is all there is to make anything out of."

Ernest goes on to share that the universe creates through a system of cause and effect and, even though many of us don't like to consider that we are responsible for creating our reality, it is a Divine law that we can wield for our benefit or our destruction. Succinctly, Ernest says it this way, "The Universe is foolproof. It does say that we can have want, but It also says that we shall have to take into our experience a logical result of our thinking, be it good or what we call evil. The Law is as impersonal as electricity. It will warm us or burn us, according to the way we use It."

What we fear, we empower and it exerts control over us and to have self-mastery we need to be aware of, and then take charge of, our thoughts. We create what we think about, what we dwell upon, and if our thoughts are on a negative outcome we will manifest that outcome regardless of the fact that we don't want it to happen.

Rather than me prattling on, I will wrap this up by saying that this book, It's up to You, has the same message as many of the other new age books in this genre: we create after our thoughts, regardless of what we want. The more we think about something AND the more emotion associated with those thoughts, the greater the power to manifest that outcome; regardless if that outcome is what we want or not. Thoughts are powerful, they are the creative foundation of the universe (as quantum physics is now establishing) and if we want success, health, prosperity etc., then we need to focus on those outcomes and not allow fear to rob us of our power.

Again, I can't emphasize enough, many of these New Thought/New Age/transformational books written by the early pioneer's in this genre say the same or similar things, only with their own words and experiences. To simply read the words on a cursory level will not likely have a huge impact and less so if we bemoan the fact the information is redundant and "We have heard all of this before." These books share profound information, in my biased opinion, and are only ink dots on paper until we "get" what these authors are trying to say. If everything in your life is how you want it, then this book and even all the books in this genre might not be of any use to you; however, if you have a sense that there is more to the universe than what you see, or if things aren't perfect for you, then this book, and the others in the genre might be what you are looking for...and here I said I wouldn't prattle on...

I have been reading Ernest Holmes for a long time, and when I made the intention to just BELIEVE., my life took off and changed for the good and better. Only you can believe, no one else can do it for you. Please do your self a big favor and just try it. Nothing to lose but to change you completely. The Course in Mircles says "it is simple but not easy" You will fall out, fall down laughing when you realize what happens. Good Luck. Remember the more you give the more you receive.

It is generally accepted in the mental-health community that exercise can be an antidote to depression. Nor is it much in dispute that exercise is beneficial to one’s overall health. So it’s rather odd that Johnsgard, professor emeritus of psychology at San Jose State University, insists on declaring that the connection between good mood and exercise is new. Nonetheless, his volume is a useful consideration of the evidence; it presents experimental studies and case studies that trace the role of exercise in elevating mood, as well as studies comparing the effect of exercise with other forms of treatment, such as talk therapy and medication. Getting into more specific questions, he cites evidence that aerobic and anaerobic exercise are equally effective, even for the most severely depressed. In terms of the relative efficacy of exercise and Zoloft, he offers only one study (and of only this one drug) as evidence that exercise has longer-lasting effects in elevating mood than the drug. While Johnsgard is a proselytizer, he’s not dogmatic—he acknowledges that exercise alone is not always enough to deal with depression or anxiety, that it should be used in conjunction with psychotherapy, and that in some cases it just isn’t effective. The author examines how to motivate oneself to exercise, how to exercise well, and how to deal with the possible risks of exercise. Covering all the relevant issues makes this a very useful handbook for anyone suffering from depression or anxiety.

The reviewer below, C Fink, wrote a great review of this book, but I have one comment to add: although the author is a runner and some of the studies he cites are based on runners, the author states clearly that any aerobic exercise is fine. I'm not a runner and as I was reading, I didn't think of it as a running book (I prefer bicycling and hiking/walking).

I've read quite a few books on depression and anxiety. Although many of them helped me to learn and understand, this book was the most practical/pragmatic. Move your body, breathe hard, you'll feel better. (As the author states, one may also need therapy and medication.)

I feel like giving this book to people living with depression and/or anxiety. It could make a huge difference.

Very insightful

This is one of the best books I have read on depression - and I've read a boatload. Keeping in mind that different people respond to information in different ways, choose this book if you like reading facts, statistics, scientific studies and their application to depression (don't let that description lead you to believe the book is dry or dull, just that this is not a wishy-washy book filled with reader testimonies or inspiring images). I especially enjoyed his meta-analysis of multiple studies which he used to illustrate many different aspects of the relationship between depression and exercise, and also his discussion of diet and weightloss in a depression context. Whilst his tone is factual and serious (with everything referenced and clearly backed up), everything is still well explained for the layperson (such as myself). I highly reccommend this book.

Good News from a Runner's World

I came to Johnsgard's book as a recreational runner with none of the psychological disorders he addresses in his book (none diagnosed, anyway). Actually, the title of this delightful book is something of a misnomer; only one of the four sections deals specifically with mental health. In the other three sections, Johnsgard-a psychology professor and a long-time distance runner-takes what I would call an anthropological view of the sport, addressing, as he does, the history of Homo Sapiens and our natural inclination to run. Johnsgard's book is a training manual, a DSM4, and a natural history all in one.

What I appreciated most about the book-and there's plenty here for expert runners as well as beginners-was the author's unique perspective. Using both clinical data and anthropological evidence, Johnsgard shows us how far we've come from Shangri-La, and how running can help us return. The author is a fellow homo-naturalis, so if you're homo-progressus, you're not going to find your techno-manna here. Johnsgard debunks the protein diet fads and gives evidence that elements of the hunter-gatherer existence are necessary for physical and mental well-being.

Johnsgard is foremost a good storyteller, and beginning with book's prologue, he incorporates elements of case study to illuminate his topics. The result is a thoroughly interesting read about the science and history of running. And while the author is always knowledgeable about his subjects-from existential drift to cardiorespiratory fitness-he's humble too; one gets the sense that he's learned all this news the hard way, and at some personal expense. Johnsgard comes across as the kind of runner you'd like to meet on the trail.

Chances are you'll see yourself often in these pages, and that you'll come away with at least a few ideas for self-improvement through exercise.
