Curator/art critic Wilkin expands on The World of Edward Gorey (1996), which she coauthored, with this illustrated collection of 21 interviews that reveal Gorey's interests, foibles and habits. Gorey (1925-2001) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, was drafted in 1943 (training in Utah, he began his writing career with "unpresentable... closet dramas") and majored in French at Harvard. He initially published his books through his own Fantod Press. More than 100 titles followed The Unstrung Harp (1953), and his readership expanded in 1972 with the first of the Amphigorey anthologies. Interviews culled from magazines (Cats, Dance, Vanity Fair), newspapers, NPR and TV (Dick Cavett) reveal Gorey's cultural influences and inspirations (cats, crime narratives, Louis Feuillade, Buster Keaton, the New York City Ballet, Ivy Compton-Burnett) along with minutiae and insights into his erudite, eccentric humor. Best of all, readers glimpse Gorey's creative processes: the texts almost always preceded the drawings, for instance. It's very possible that the only thing more peculiar and arresting than Edward Gorey's books and illustrations is Gorey himself. This collection of chronologically arranged interviews with Gorey (1925-99) spans three decades and shines light into many corners of his eccentric life and work. Gorey ponders his own bizarre dress (floor-length fur coats and sneakers), his obsession with the New York City Ballet, and his life with six cats and even manages to delve into some of the inspirations that fuel his enigmatic and strangely endearing work. This assembly by Wilkin (an art historian, independent curator, and critic, as well as coauthor of The World of Edward Gorey) reveals a charming, extremely intelligent, articulate, and eminently likable artist and writer. A thoughtful self-portrait thus emerges from the mist of questions and answers, one that helps to counter the paucity of recent Gorey scholarship. Gorey's own words clarify his peculiar and macabre worldview more succinctly than any biographer could hope to. Recommended for public and academic libraries.

This book sounds like a great idea

I am an Edward Gorey Fan. This book sounds like a great idea. It is a set of interviews from 1973 to 1999. And here lies both the strength and the weakness of this type of book. Each interviewer has his or her own line of questions for Gorey’s and each publication has its own focus on him (and it may have nothing to do with his art). Also an interview in 1973 cannot cover where his talents and interests may have lead by 1995. In the interviews we find Gorey’s obsession for the performances of the New York City Ballet, the authors he loves, the artists who may have influenced his work plus his life with cats. That is the strength of the book. Here is the weakness: many of the interviewers repeat the same questions. Gorey’s answers do not change and he provides the same story surrounding the subject. It does not take long before you feel like you could have taken the interview for him since you just learned the answers three times over. This is a collection of interviews and it works with that purpose in mind.
There are things in the book I did not know about Edward Gorey – he liked the television programs Dallas and Dr. Who. He was a precocious two year old and was known for his peculiar attire even in his Harvard days.

Irrisistible peculiarity

Wish I could give all my friends a copy for they would be charmed by Edward Gorey the person as he reveals himself in several interviews, and by Edward Gorey the artist as revealed by his drawings and several articles describing the man and his work. He is an original gifted with a fresh and open outlook on life. His comments can be honestly direct and disarming, yet there's always an element of the unexpected, the askew, and droll as though he had a special once-removed lens through which he viewed, considered, and depicted the world. He has created an absurdist world inhabited by unmistakably Goreyan-Edwardian characters in formal attire caught in silent poses with blank, deadpan looks unaware of impending catastrophe.
Absolutely love him and his work for I'm a sucker for asymmetrical lives, odd or macabre juxtapositions, and lyrical line....his line.

Too much repetition = boring

I ended up quite bored with the repetitive sameness of the information; meaning if Gorey was doing an interview he said xyz and in another interview he again said xyz etc etc. I did like maybe two of the included magazine articles on him.

John Chamberlain rose to prominence in the late 1950s with energetic, vibrant sculptures hewn from disused car parts, achieving a three-dimensional form of Abstract Expressionism that astounded critics and captured the imaginations of fellow artists. For a seven-year period in the mid-1960s, the artist abandoned automotive metal and turned to other materials. Motivated by scientific curiosity, Chamberlain produced sculptures in unorthodox media, such as urethene foam, galvanized steel, paper bags, mineral-coated Plexiglas and aluminum foil. Since returning in 1972 to metal as his primary material, Chamberlain limited himself to specific parts of the automobile, adding color to found car parts, dripping, spraying and patterning on top of existing hues to an often wild effect. In recent years, the artist has embarked on the production of a new body of work that demonstrates a decided return to earlier themes. John Chamberlain: Choices accompanies the Guggenheim Museum exhibition, which comprises 95 works, from the artist’s earliest monochromatic iron sculptures to the outsized foil creations he is working on today, encompassing shifts in scale, material and methods informed by the collage process that has been central to Chamberlain’s working method. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue includes essays by Susan Davidson, Donna De Salvo, Dave Hickey, Adrian Kohn and Charles Ray with an extensive chronology by Helen Hsu and a lexicon by Don Quaintance.

Chamberlain Crushes

John Chamberlain (1927 -2011) was an American sculptor who manipulated crushed car parts into abstract clusters that are both gorgeous and terrifying. Thos monograph commemorates an exhibition at the Guggenheim and in many ways captures the essence of that installation as installed on the Guggenheim Museum's curved ramps. The works include those made from foam, aluminum foil, paper and plexiglass, and emphasizes the collage process behind the metal sculptures rather than the material that went into them. Chamberlain was an ace colorist, who used the scrap yard as his palette. He made deforming big chunks of automobiles look as easy as crushing a soda can or scrunching up a piece of paper. The suggestion of sudden violence, whether car generated or not, gives his art much of its power.

Curator Susan Davidson deftly navigates Mr. Chamberlain's many contradictions. He was a trained hairdresser who got into drunken street fights, an East Coaster whose work seemed steeped in California car culture, a large-scale sculptor who periodically turned out twee tabletop constructions. The monograph's presentation make clear why Chamberlain's sculpture was hailed, almost from its inception, as a three-dimensional answer to Abstract Expressionist painting. But alongside early homages to peers like David Smith and de Kooning are collages, made from scraps of fabric and paper roughly stapled to painted fiberboard, that look back several decades to the German Dadaist Kurt Schwitters.

In addition to the pristine reproductions of these difficult to photograph works of sculpture are essays by Charles Ray (who elegantly summarizes the problem many viewers have with Chamberlain's late work - "The early work had topology rather than surface, compression rather than form, the later sculptures shifted from being made of cars to being made from cars."), Susan Davidson, Donna De Salvo, David Hickey and Adrian Kohn. About the most important sculptor in modern times
By The photo book: "Vacant Eden"
My favorite sculptor and this book is full of pictures of some of his best work. I do abstract work myself and I can see the amazing fluidity with composition that this book showcases. At first the work looks like interesting crushed cars. But upon closer examination viewers can begin to understand how complex this sculptor's approach is to metal and shapes, how often organic shapes emerge from the work.
Of course, the work is best seem in the round when it is available.

About the Author

John Kremer runs his own successful consultancy business, having been a Reader in Psychology at Queen's University Belfast for 31 years. Along with his academic interest in sport and exercise psychology he has worked directly with a wide range of national and international athletes and teams in over 50 sports.

Aidan Moran is a Professor of Cognitive Psychology�at University College Dublin. A Fulbright Scholar, he has written many scientific papers on mental imagery and attention in athletes. He has advised many of Ireland’s leading professional athletes and teams, including golfer P�draig Harrington and the Irish rugby team.

This reader/rhetoric emphasizes the argumentative strategies readers need to analyze and write arguments. At the same time, it helps users see that Americans have always defined themselves and maintained a sense of unity—despite great diversity—through ongoing public debate about what America means. Selections reflect colonial times to the present, and include posters, photographs, advertisements, and court cases in addition to essays, poems, and stories that represent arguments in American culture, the art and craft of persuasion, writing essays, integrating research into writing, American dreams, justice and civil liberties, frontiers, war and violence, work and play, and family, identities. We developed the third edition of Creating America to provide a book that focuses on argumentation and persuasion in the context of American history and tradition: a book that brings together materials revolving around issues that have always concerned Americans. This edition maintains the focus of the previous two on argumentation in context, but with some major additions. The chapter formerly called "War and the Enemy" is now "War and Violence," to allow for a consideration of a wider range of materials and experience. Part 1, Contexts for Reading and Writing Arguments, is now four separate chapters. Chapter One, "Arguments in American Cultures," is an overview of the historical scope, design, and intent of the book. Chapter Two, "The Art and Craft of Persuasion," is a three-part assessment and analysis of distinct persuasive components. The first part of the chapter, "Persuasion and Audience," provides the rhetorical underpinning for argumentation, with explanations and examples of the relationship between rhetor and audience, the purpose and effect of Aristotelian appeals, and common uses and abuses of logic. The second section in this chapter, "Persuasion in Diverse Genres," discusses specific genres included in the text—essays, legal cases, fiction, poetry, film, advertisements, speeches, and so on—and illustrates the persuasive elements they share as well as those advantages that are unique to each of them. The final part of the chapter, "Elements of Persuasion," concentrates on those components that all writers use to some degree, such as assertions, examples, assumptions, definitions, and refutations, and that constitute the practical continuum of those underlying rhetorical assumptions discussed in the first part of the chapter. Chapter Two also contains two new student essays as illustrations: an analysis of visual persuasion in a famous Vietnam War photograph, and an analysis of refutation in the Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education.

Chapters Three and Four are devoted to different but related aspects of essay writing. Chapter Three, "Writing Essays," moves students through the whole writing process, from strategies for pre-writing to developing a thesis, organizing an essay, and shaping an argument. In order to concretize these suggestions, we have also included, under the sections which discuss expository, analytical, and argumentative writing, examples of each kind of essay, followed by discussion of their rhetorical and developmental strategies. The expository essay, from the 1920s, is a paean to New York energy by a Korean immigrant—"A Korean Discovers New York." The analytical essay is a student's deconstruction of a well-known Vietnam anti-war poster which plays off the very famous James Montgomery Flagg World War I poster of Uncle Sam. And in the argumentative essay, a philosopher makes the case for "Affirmative Action in Context."

Chapter Four, "Research," is about integrating research into writing. Building on Chapter Three, it guides the student through all the steps of the research process: approaching a topic and gathering information (including on-line information); strategies for internet research, search engines, ways of evaluating web-based information, and sample web sites; detailed discussions and samples of library sources; and sections on drafting, revision, and documentation.

Teachers integrating the rhetorical material with readings, as well as teachers wishing to use the readings alone and teach with a different model of argument, such as the Toulmin model, will find a rich range of materials in Part II, "Argument in the American Tradition." Part II offers textual and visual arguments for analysis and discussion. Chapter 5, "Identities," includes a range of materials from early discussions of what is uniquely American to contemporary struggles of building community yet maintaining cultural identity. Chapter 6, "American Dreams," includes selections on both political and material dreams and success. Chapter 7, "Images of Gender and Family," offers different perspectives on what makes a family and what constitutes the particular roles and rights of men, women, and children; Chapter 8, "Work and Play," looks at the business of America—business; and at the business of play, or contemporary American sports. Chapter 9, "Justice and Civil Liberties," brings together core readings and images of American freedoms and the struggles that precede and accompany them. Chapter 10, "War and Violence," offers visual and textual arguments about how we idealize our friends and demonize our enemies. Chapter 11, "Frontiers," analyzes both the idea and the reality of the frontier and the West.

Each chapter includes an introduction to the core theme or issue. Selections follow, with headnotes for context and background information; journal prompts to guide reflective writing; and questions for discussion and writing, with a focus on analysis and argumentation. In each chapter we include a recommended film that should be available as a video rental in most colleges or communities. Most chapters also include at least one student essay, generally written in response to a chapter writing suggestion; inclusion of these essays is based on the premise that student writing is an appropriate focus for analysis and discussion.

Creating America, third edition, is designed for use in a first-year course in composition, particularly one emphasizing argumentative writing. The underlying pedagogy is based on an Aristotelian model, but it is informed by the theories of Kenneth Burke, Carl Rogers, and feminist critics. Our premise is that people use, to quote Aristotle, "all of the available means of persuasion" to argue a point; therefore, we do not treat argument and persuasion separately. Rather, we focus on the appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos, introducing induction and deduction under logos as the basic principles by which to evaluate and through which to develop arguments. The selections represent a range of arguments, from rather combative debate to more dialogic, narrative explorations of difficult questions and complex issues.

I loved this anthology,partly because of the very useful introductory materials on arugment and partly because of the range of readings.The first four chapters of the book work as a good intro to writing essays, conducting research, and understanding arugment, and the rest of the book not only includes a great variety of readings, but also offers a number of visuals and student papers, both of which have gone over very well wtih my students.

This text covers a range of genres and eras. The pedagodical approach enables instructors and students to focus on the core issues of argument without getting lost in the terminology of some models (i.e., Toulmin). More visual materials would be helpful but the book does address visual rhetoric in a way that emphasizes argument.

About the Author

Linda S. Fazio received the 1999 Occupational Therapy Association of California Award of Excellence for significant contributions to occupational therapy. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, Student Services and Counseling from the University of North Texas as well as an MS in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a BS in Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman's University. She consults widely on occupational therapy academic curriculum development, curriculum design, and community program design and development.

Great book!

I am very curious about this book that is why I bought it. This book is very informative and interesting to read. It's a big help for staying anonymous online, especially in this generation wherein almost all of the population worldwide have online accounts, mostly on social media where identity theft exists. Worth a read if for no other reason then to understand what else is going on on the web. Great book!

So intriguing. It's something that boggles my mind and always knew it is there but always an enigma to me. This was my first insight about how the dark net operates. I am not going to run out and start browsing on the dark web or anything but when I am curious about something its amazing to really deep dive into the subject. I recommend for all !

I am getting the hang of transacting business online that's why I need utmost protection on my password, cookies or website trails etc. This book taught me what I need to know about protecting my transactions and most especially my identity. I do not consider myself a professional when it comes to things techie that why I desire to update myself every now and then on the world of net and programming. About the Author
Dana S. Dunn is Professor of Psychology and Assistant Dean for Special Projects at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He earned his PhD in experimental social psychology from the University of Virginia and his BA in psychology from Carnegie Mellon University.
A Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA Divisions 1, 2 and 22) and the Association for Psychological Science, Dunn is active in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP - APA Division 2) where he served as President in 2010. In 2013, Dunn received the Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award from the American Psychological Foundation and in 2015 he was the APA s Harry Kirke Wolfe lecturer. He is a member of the editorial boards of several journals and is a frequent speaker at national and regional psychology conferences. Dunn is past board member of the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) and formerly served on the Program Committee for the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology (NIToP).
The author of over 150 articles, chapters, and book reviews, Dunn writes about the teaching of psychology, the social psychology of disability, and liberal education. He is the author or editor of 20 books and writes a blog on the teaching psychology called "Head of the Class" for Psychology Today. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Oxford Bibliographies (OB): Psychology.

At Moravian, Dunn has held various leadership positions, including serving as Chair of the Department of Psychology for six years and Acting Chair of the Department of Philosophy for three and one-half years. As past Director of the Learning in Common (LinC) Curriculum, Dunn oversaw Moravian s general education program.

Jane S. Halonen has been a Professor Psychology at the University of West Florida for over a decade. She has been fortunate also to have great professional families at James Madison University and Alverno College where she was lucky enough to cross paths with the talented Cynthia Gray. Jane s research most recent research emphases have been on helping good departments become great ones as well as trying to help legislators understand the true nature of psychology in tough economic times. Jane has been involved over the course of her career with helping the American Psychological Association develop guidelines or standards of academic performance from high school through graduate levels of education. In 2000, she won the Distinguished Teaching Award winner by the American Psychological Foundation and the American Psychological Association named her an Eminent Woman in Psychology in 2003. She served as the Chief Reader for the Psychology Advanced Placement Reading from 2004-2009. A self-identified teaching conference junkie, Jane served on the NITOP Board and has presented at nearly every regional teaching conference in psychology. With Peter Seldin, she also co-directed the International Conference on Improving University Teaching from 2001-2008. "

Membrane Transport Processes in Organized Systems is a softcover book containing portions of Physiology of Membrane Disorders (Second Edition). The parent volume contains six major sections. This text encompasses the fourth and fifth sections: Transport Events in Single Cells and Transport in Epithelia: Vectorial Transport through Parallel Arrays. We hope that this smaller volume, which deals with transport processes in single cells and in organized epithelia, will be helpful to individuals interested in general physiology, transport in single cells and epithelia, and the methods for studying those transport processes. SCHULTZ Vll Preface to the Second Edition The second edition of Physiology of Membrane Disorders represents an extensive revision and a considerable expansion ofthe first edition . Yet the purpose of the second edition is identical to that of its predecessor, namely, to provide a rational analysis of membrane transport processes in individual membranes, cells, tissues, and organs, which in tum serves as a frame of reference for rationalizing disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes play a cardinal role in the clinical expression of disease. As in the first edition, this book is divided into a number of individual, but closely related, sections. Part V represents a new section where the problem of transport across epithelia is treated in some detail. Finally, Part VI, which analyzes clinical derangements, has been enlarged appreciably.
