It examines the history of suicide bombing in Iraq and many other countries, theoretical perspectives on suicide bombing, the varied factions that comprise the insurgency, the ideology and theology of martyrdom supporting suicide bombers, their national origins and characteristics, and the prospects for a “third generation” of transnational jihadists forged in the crucible of Iraq.

Excellent, readable, accurate analysis of Iraq

Professor Hafez breaks down the complex system of Iraq and the insurgency there into a very readable and well organized analysis. I have read almost every book out there on suicide bombers and political violence and this is my favorite since the author takes the reader through a systematic understanding of the motivations behind the suicide bombers.

Others have praised this book, and so do I. What I really liked about this book was the very detailed analysis that the author undertook in explaining the suicidal-martyr philosophy of the Salafis movement. The author hasn't just read two or three other books about Baathist terrorism and summarized them. One can tell from the in-depth analysis here that the author has sunk his hands deeply into the statistics-data pile in explaining whether the various suicide bombers are local or originate elsewhere. Before I read this book, I thought I pretty well understood the jihadist Salafi movement, but this book greatly enhanced my understanding. As the author reads Arabic, this enhances his understanding in how to explain the nuances of Salafism that most western pseudo-terrorists analysts can't research and thereby can't explain. Even if this book didn't discuss the Iraqi suicide-bombers, it would be worthwhile in reading just for its clear analysis of the theology of the jihadist Salafi suicide martyrs (and not just in Iraq, but throughout the Middle East).

An Irresponsible Text

As a professional hoodoo rootworker, academic, ethnographer, and U.S.-based African-American, I found this book very painful to read. Simply the fact there is a chapter titled "Hoodoo Gods" is indicative of this author's lack of research and, therefore, lack of real interest in the craft of hoodoo or sharing a true understanding of the practice from its origins, even if she *then* wanted to put her own spin on things. The "God" of Southern-based hoodoo is the Protestant Christian god - not the orishas or the lwa - and though many contemporary rootworkers find a way to mesh this purely folk magick system with their own cosmologies, the author does a disservice to readers in what is supposed to be an introductory text. Even if she is referencing the New Orleans-Style hoodoo practices in which the orishas and lwa are important, they are not considered gods. Again, the author makes no distinction.

And this is difficult to swallow because this (and innumerable other aspects of this text) in which the author blatantly states that she is assuming information about African-American history and traditional practices are *easily* researched online by any vaguely interested layperson. The methodology and intent of the text reek of colonialism.

The deepest pain in reading this text is that it represents just another promulgation of this oppressed and newly popular tradition to a wider audience in a watered down, fact-less, heartless manner. In taking on the task of writing a book about this tradition, this popular author chose to tell an oppressed people's story but forsook her responsibilities hands-down. This text is a sad cheap trick.

I would never practice another culture's spiritual traditions and then write a book on it without directly interfacing with the culture-bearers and making them a significant part of my writing the book and, were I to write such a book, I'd want to question "Why? What do *I* have to offer here?" Most likely it would be cultural translation, my social mobility, or other gifts associated with a privilege that I have, which would only deepen my sense of responsibility to the tradition and its keepers.

The lack of that sense of responsibility is tremendously evident here.

Not a great book

I decided on three stars instead of two because overall this is a decent introduction to hoodoo. It is watered down ALOT. There are aspects of hoodoo that are a bit much for the faint of heart (like graveyard dirt) that the author talks about substituting for. This is simply not something that is done. There certain ingredients used for different hoodoo tricks that cannot be substituted.

This book is also very thin. Not much information at all. Most of this information can be found with a Google search for hoodoo. I would recommend spending a little extra money and going ahead and getting a better hoodoo resource than this. Cat Yronwoode's stuff is amazing and traditional.

A good beginner's guide

Hoodoo, or ‘working the root’, is the generic term for an eclectic system of magic that draws on influences from all over the place and believed to have originated in the Mississippi Delta among the dense population of slaves from that area. From there it spread throughout the
southern States and north along the Mississippi as African-Americans left the Delta in the 1930’s and continuously developed from contact with other cultures, religions, and traditions. In Pagan Portals: Hoodoo Folk Magic, Rachel Patterson continues this tradition by incorporating the practice into her witchcraft. As she explains in her Introduction: “I am not a born and bred hereditary Hoodoo root worker living in Georgia or New Orleans (I hope to come back in another lifetime as one though…), but I have studied Hoodoo in great detail. This is MY interpretation of Hoodoo and how I work with it within the Craft. I have tried to make it as accurate as possible and have drawn on many sources as well as my own experiences. I have included many original recipes for oils, powders, incenses etc and have tried to be as traditional as possible with the ingredients for the well known ones, but other recipes included here are my own blends and therefore may not be so traditional.” Rachel provides us with a valuable introduction to the subject at a very basic level because the subject is far more complex than is often imagined. A perfect prologue for anyone wishing to discover more about ‘working the root’ and how to incorporate it into their own system of magic. Highly recommended. The authors examine the requirements of a modern spectrometer and the effects of pulses and discuss the effects of dynamic processes as a function of temperature or pressure on NMR spectra. The book concludes with chapters on some of the applications of NMR spectroscopy to medical and non-medical imaging techniques and solid state chemistry of both I = F1/2 and I > F1/2 nuclei. Examples and problems, mainly from the recent inorganic/organometallic chemistry literature support the text throughout. Brief answers to all the problems are provided in the text with full answers at the end of the book.

A good guide to using hypnotic language patterns for therapists and coaches

This book is a part of the trilogy of books the author has named Cognitive Hypnotherapy, and you will get the most of them if you go through all three - Wordweaving, The Question is the Answer, and Cognitive Hypnotherapy: What's That About.

In this first book, Wordweaving, Trevor gives an overview of the process consisting of asking questions to find out what is the problem state and what would client like to experience instead, and then guiding the client from the problem to the solution using hypnotic language.

If you've taken NLP Master Practitioner course, you are already familiar with hypnotic language patterns, working with submodalities and Robert Dilt's (or Gregory Bateson's) neurological levels.

Trevor suggests asking questions related to the (1) context of the problem (in what context does the problem manifest), (2) structure of the problem (using submodalities), (3) process through which the problem manifests, and the (4) consequence of he problem state.

He uses, what he calls a Matrix model to delineate the stages of the process through which the problem manifests, beginning with the (1) stimulus that starts the problem state, (2) memory matrix (in NLP usually referred to as transderivational search where the mind looks for any related past experiences), (3) emotion that arises out of that information and results in a (4) response which manifests through some kind of behavior, (5) termination, where the person has stopped as it has fulfilled its usefulness, and finally (6) evaluation, which occurs on conscious and unconscious levels and where individuals evaluates the usefulness of the information. Interrupting the process of manifestation of the problem and altering it in some way would transform the problem, and it's one way that Trevor suggests for helping the client to overcome the problem.

Another model that Trevor suggests for helping the client to overcome the problem is by addressing manifestation of the problem and the solutions to the problem through neurological levels - how does the problem manifest in the client's (1) environment, (2) in client's behavior, (3) on the level of capabilities, (4) client's beliefs, and on the level of (5) identity. Dilt's model incorporates the spiritual level or one's overall life purpose, which Trevor has omitted form his model, and which you may want to incorporate if you so prefer.

The first book, Wordweaving, goes in greater depth over the hypnotic language patterns. The second book, The Question is the Answer, continues with helping you to refine your skill in asking the questions.

This book may be the most appropriate for those involved in coaching, counselling or therapy and those who enjoy NLP and have previous NLP training may find it easier to understand due to the familiarity with a good portion of the material presented in this book. This book helps you to apply hypnotic language to the neurological levels, for the person of problem resolution.

I found this book to be very instructive in a fresh and novel kind of way. It gives a novice person wanting to learn about hypnosis and the use of suggestions a beginning point from where to start. It never leaves one in the dark about why one is using certain words or phrases and why they are put together in a certain way. Many question are answered doing it this way. Good job.

This is a well written book with lots of good ideas. British author sounds too acedemic in places, but practicing hypnotists will recognize much of what Mr Silvester is highlighting. I like academic thinking; it made me consider what methods and why, rather than defaulting to habitual methods. I would recommend this book.

This is an excellent book for beginners in electricity.

This book is written in the standard format for a classroom environment, which makes it very easy to follow and find previously read topics you may have forgotten. However, some sections would be easier to learn with the aid of a teacher; although, it is still possible to learn the material without one. This book covers a wide range of topics for electricity, but not many applications of it. Over all, this book provides you with a strong foundation in the electrical field.

This Book should not be underestimated or dismissed; it is worth exploring.

And I don't mean typos! This author has no clue about even the most basic concepts of electricity. I've seen hundeds of electicity books over the past three decades, but none include so many false concepts as Fowler's book. He confuses mass with weight, potential with potential energy, potential with force, etc. He includes that big lie that voltage makes current flow (No! Electric force makes charges flow from one voltage level to another.) If you want to be a massively ignorant electrician, this is the book for you. If you want to learn basic electrical concepts, get ANY other book. Better yet, try Thomas Floyd's books-he only makes a couple mistakes in his book. However, if you are up to snuff with your calculus, get a college introductory physics text with several chapters on electricity and avoid all the garbage taught to electrical field workers for the past century...
