A vampire book with bite!

I've become a little wary of vampire books in recent years because I feel like I've been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt at least a dozen times. Fortunately, this was one of those times I needn't have worried. BLOOD SHADOWS reminded me why I fell in love with vampire books in the first place, and why they will always be a staple part of my reading diet. Because when a vampire book is done right, it's right.
At first glance, BLOOD SHADOWS may seem like just another paranormal romance, but trust me, boys and girls, it is so much more! Pryor weaves in some intriguing dystopian-ish elements, creating a society where powerhouse supernatural races (aka "third species") are policed by humans. Hostilities, conflicts and age-old resentments abound. The world of BLOOD SHADOWS is a dark and violent place, and Pryor doesn't pull any punches conveying that to the reader.
The heroine of the story, Caitlin Parish, is a woman on a mission. As an agent of the VCU, it is her job to maintain order and keep the third species in check - and she's extremely good at what she does. Her latest assignment is tracking the elusive vampire Kane, a man who has consistently slipped through VCU fingers and whose list of crimes would make even the most nefarious of villains blush. Caitlin has studied Kane for years, determined to be the one to finally bring him to justice, but her interest in him isn't solely professional. Because, you see, as an old and powerful vampire, Kane may hold the secret to solving a mystery that has haunted Caitlin for years. She wants - no, she needs - information only Kane can give her.
Kane is no fool. He is fully aware of Caitlin's obsession with him. Little does she know, he has been watching her as well, and he has every intention of using her to fulfill his own plans.
Caitlin is a kickass heroine, yet there's a surprising fragility to her as well. I connected to her character easily and was right there with her through every emotional up and down. But Kane...Kane stole this show, folks. He isn't one of those "woe is me" vampires who is forever bemoaning his unfortunate, undead fate. Instead, he fully embraces who and what he is, thumbs his nose at human authority, isn't afraid to play dirty (in fact, he rather enjoys it), and best of all, he doesn't apologize for any of it. I freaking LOVED him.
The push-pull dynamic between Caitlin and Kane is superb and quite possibly the best I've ever read. They are relentless together, constantly pushing buttons, testing boundaries and peeling away layers. At the same time, they are fighting an intense and entirely mutual attraction which neither one of them wants to give in to. While their relationship does unfold over a relatively short period of time, it never once felt rushed or manufactured to me. Pryor makes every moment between these characters count, and the result is a complex, fully developed, and insanely hot romance.
BLOOD SHADOWS is a deliciously twisted and exciting tale. Everyone has an agenda, and motives are murky. Just when you think you've figured out who is doing what and why, Pryor will rip the rug out from under your feet. This isn't a comfortable and cozy read, folks. It will shake and stir you in the best of ways. I couldn't put it down.
Do I recommend this book? Hell yes! Whether you're a diehard vamp fan or just a lover of all things that bite and go bump in the night, BLOOD SHADOWS is a story you won't want to miss.

Blood Shadows - I can't bring myself to like the main characters

I'm having rather mixed feelings about Blood Shadows. Mainly the romance element (which is a gigantic part of the story). We have Kane Malloy our dangerous, sadistic, likes to murder/torture people vampire...as the love interest. I mean are we supposed to actually like this guy? Within the first seven chapters he is a sexist douchebag, is constantly sexually harassing the main sex-crazed moron-I mean heroine, ransacks her apartment and drugs her to kidnap her - chaining her to a headboard in her undergarments and all she can think about is how hot his 300 - sorry 400+ year old self is. I am not impressed. This girl is straight stupid. I mean her attraction to him is completely physical. The author goes on for pages about how this guy is involved in countless crimes which include MURDER AND TORTURE that they go on to explain that he ENJOYS. He also apparently wants to take her soul.
But OMG he's like..SO HAWT. Which is so obviously important/sarcasm. Then he starts to feed on some girl and vaguely cuts her up (apparently not enough to scar her - as if that makes it any better) to warn her not to hang around vampires? I repeat, why the hell would we like this guy? Oh right, cause he is sexy and a vampire. Spare me.
Even as I continue to read I don't even care if he did everything he was accused of or if he was punishing people for something they did. Mostly because I'm getting so incredibly sick of him being described as something so immaculate and perfect by some deranged girl who is too obsessed with his looks instead of anything else, even his personality. Not that his personality would win anyone over except vampire fangirls.
I want to backhand Caitlin on practically every page. She's always going on about how she is "in control" and "knows what she is doing" and "she can handle this", "play his game" and she DOESN'T EVER. She is always wrong. She goes on about how she shouldn't find him attractive, then goes on about how sexy she is...and how she hates him for it. What? She acts like letting him feel her up is getting him to let his guard down, but in the end she's always the one who loses control or getting caught off guard. I can't bring myself to care about her or her situation because she's idiotic. I mean she literally says that he won't rape her. YET. Like she's commenting on the weather or something. The more I read about her, the more I'd rather just quit wasting my time. The things she says, the things she does, I'm not even rooting for her.
I was under the impression (from the summary and some reviews) that Caitlin was supposed to be some badass who rocks at her job. None of this is true. For Caitlin being so awesome at her job, makes no sense. She makes stupid reckless decisions and is commended for it, she isn't physically powerful, she just has a stronger ability than most. That doesn't make her better than others. Most disappointing.
I want to beat my face into something...because the idea behind the story is intriguing. I'm so curious about the thing killing off her family. The hints about the prophecy and the possibility that the company that she works for may not be so good.
So mixed feelings, I'm torn between being curious and trying to drag myself through reading more of this nonsense. In the end, I can't stand either of the main characters so I may as well cut my losses and quit torturing myself by reading more of it, in hopes that my opinions will change.

Dark, Mysterious, and Sexy - A Must Read!

Blood Shadows is a wonderful start to a new paranormal romance series by Lindsay J. Pryor. Caitlin is an agent with the Vampire Control Unit, and her goal is to capture a master vampire named Kane. Kane has a horrible reputation, and the VSU has been wanting to get their hands on him for a long time. Caitlin has personal plans of her own though. Something is coming after her, and she knows that Kane is the only one who can help her.
This book is dark, mysterious, and sexy. Caitlin and Kane are both using each other for their own purposes. Neither of them thought they would fall for each other - especially Kane. He hasn't felt anything but hatred since his sister was brutally murdered several years ago. Caitlin slowly breaks down his walls. There is a ton of sexual tension throughout the book, and the sex scenes are HOT. It's passionate and intense.
Weaved around the emotional romance is an amazing plot. It has a complex storyline with twists and turns. You won't be able to put this book down, and you'll be wondering what is going to happen up until the last page. I was sad to see Caitlin and Kane's story end. I'm really looking forward to the next book, Blood Roses - however, it will be based around different characters. I hope it's as good as this one!
