Disabled text-to-speech function

Don't bother with buying the Kindle edition for accessibility. The publisher has disabled the text-to-speech function for this book, so you can't listen to it. I contacted the publisher to try and convince them to please allow Amazon to turn this feature back on for their kindle e-book reader (which I was told by Amazon is normally the default) but I got nowhere. Amazon told me directly that this publisher had chosen to turn this feature off on their book. Making an educational textbook inaccessible to those with disabilities is not acceptable.

Good For Review Or Intro To Economics

This recaps a lot of the things from my undergrad days and also introduces some new topics (I'm guessing what would be upper-division Econ classes). The layout is very easy on the eyes and the concepts are pretty easy to follow. I kinda wish I would have reviewed Calculus prior to reading some of this though.

Terrible textbook. Terrible HW problems at the end of the chapter and reads like the author is used to writing a math textbook. However, like most of you reading this, you are probably required to get it.

Advice? RENT IT! Do not waste any money on buying it. You will not reference it in the future.

Very Interesting!

This by far has been one of the most eye opening accounts of gang life in the hard streets of Los Angeles, CA. Growing up and knowing many of those places related in this book I can only imagine what Shakur went through. The book shows us right from the start the lack of attention and love that many children experience growing up in these kind of communities and the lack of resources to stray them away from the choice of becoming a gang-member. Though this is not an excuse and Shakur recounts this, none the less he decided to take that route. Receiving the name Monster after brutally beating someone up to the point where the newspapers said, it "was a monster" who must have committed such a brutal act we are taken from his early years to those of a hard core gang-member. What I really liked about this book was how well it was written and how the author held nothing back. But what was most interesting is how he opens his eyes to the violence and lifestyle he chose to live and changes everything around while in prison. I do want to advice that this book has strong language, but it is a very interesting account to the life of a hardcore gangster and his transformation.

Outstanding!

This is definitely the best text on Reliability Engineering that I've seen. Leemis really brings the material to life in a way that I have not seen replicated in the other texts that I have perused. For a first introduction to Reliability, I cannot think of a better text. The reader should have a solid foundation in mathematical statistics, however, before starting on this volume. An adequate resource for building this foundation is Larson and Marx's "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics". Especially make sure you understand the basics of maximum-likelihood, as Leemis emphasizes it in his derivations -- the more advanced stuff you'll learn about in his book, however.
As an aside, I have actually taken Leemis' class, and I can honestly say that I learned more about probability from his lectures and the text than I ever previously thought possible. Again, I highly recommend the text.

The definitive introduction to reliability analysis

This is THE seminal text on reliability analysis. The author writes with the same crystal clarity he uses to present material at technical conferences. The exercises are carefully graded to lead the diligent reader toward steadily deepening understanding of the material. All diagrams are clear, cogent, carefully annotated, and well keyed to accompanying text. The definition and explanations of cut sets are especially good, allowing the engineer or analyst to economically reduce a complex problem to a set of smaller, more mathematically tractable problems. Also, this work does an excellent job of ramping the reader's knowledge upward from the justifiably assumes prerequisite of basic statistics learned in one introductory class presumably having a calculus prerequisite.

Excellent presentation of Reliability Math

I have to give it to this author, he has a very high assumption of math. If you are not a math wiz but can comprehend Calculus, this book is beyond outstanding. I will give the reader the necessary math methods for achieving you reliability analysis correctly. I spent alot of time going through these calcs and doing the proofs they are with out a dought right on the money. The boo is packed full of wonderful examples and methods. Kudos to the author.

Great concise hybrid introduction

This book has a rather unique style... it's broken into 27 mini-lectures split across three main 'topics': Learning MatLab, Advanced Programming, and Applications. Each mini-lecture constitutes a some 2-10 or so pages where they describe a particular problem and its solution on the left side of the page and list the Matlab code to solve that problem on the right hand side. They don't usually give much motivation for _why_ you might actually care about that particular problem, but if it's not reasonably self-evident (as in the case of the Learning/Advanced Matlab), most of the solutions are so compelling that it opens your eyes to ways to solves other problems that you might have never thought of before. Note that the authors assume that, for any given problem, you already have a grasp of the concepts involved. I.e., when they discuss eigenvalues and eigenvectors, the emphasis is on their use to solve a problem, but they assume you already know the definition of the 'pieces.' The applications are usually at the level of an advanced undergraduate or graduate level curriculum (i.e., they are not trivial).
What you get is a TREMENDOUS amount of information in 218 pages. It's not trying in any way to be a complete reference to Matlab, but instead is trying to get you just enough information about lots of very different aspects of programming and applications that you'll have no problem filling in the details for yourself. Hence, I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but if you've already played with some other math package (or Matlab itself) and have an idea as to the basics, you can become a much more proficient 'power user' with this book.
At the end of many mini-lectures, there are various 'exercises' for the ready to complete. Happily, the solutions are included in the back of the book! In the applications section, the exercises are not always particularly Mathlab related but instead are intended to get you to solidify your understanding of, say, SVD so that you don't just trust the tool blindly. As the exercises form a valuable type of feedback, it makes the book quite usable for self-instruction.
I don't think there's such a thing as a 'perfect' book that tries to address so many topics while keeping the page count reasonable, so while I can't give this particular attempt 5 stars, it's as good as any other I've seen and the price is quite reasonable for what you get.

Simply GREAT

I know this book from its earliest inception ("An introductory course in MATLAB", Gustafsson, 1997), and I have always loved it.

I would recommend this book to three types of people:

- Anyone new to MATLAB.

- Anyone who already knows MATLAB but who never had the opportunity to learn it the right way. I mean those who think they know MATLAB but still use for-loops.

- Anyone trying to teach MATLAB.

Furthermore, even experienced MATLAB users will have a lot of fun, specially with the exercises (with solutions!).

Another nice thing about this book is that it does not emphasize the gimmicks in the latest releases, but rather the philosophy behind MATLAB. 10 years from now, people may be using MATLAB release 34, still, this book will be useful.

About the Author
Suzy S. Ismail is currently a Visiting Professor in the Communication Department at DeVry University in North Brunswick and DeVry University Online. She received her Bachelor s in English, Communication and Middle Eastern Studies, her Master s in Communication and Information Studies, and was previously a Ph.D. student in the School of Communication at Rutgers University. She has been an active member on the Noor Ul-Iman School Board of Directors for the past six years. She is the author of When Muslim Marriage Fails, The BFF Sisters and several other pending middle-grade and young adult novels. She currently resides in New Jersey with her amazing husband of thirteen years and her three young children.

This book is very excellent and good

I read this autobiography from 9:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening and found an extra extraordinary discovery: This book is very excellent and good. There are many reasons why i think this piece of literature is excellent and informative. The reasons are too long and excellent so I will not write them down. But I will say this: This book is very excellent and good.
