Review
"The main strength is that it covers the major religions adequately. The other strength is that it covers the traditional religions in the Americas and in Africa. The other strength is that the vocabulary words are bolded and there is a glossary for them."
- Ivory Lyonns, Mount Union College

"Very good textbook, it covers all the world religions from east to the west, this means, it is complete, thorough, and comprehensive. It gives a place to discuss those new religions such as Baha'i faith and some other hot topics such as Religion and Violence, etc. It offers some new perspectives and points of view to consider regarding religion and its role in the contemporary world."

Dear Colleague,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new edition of Religions of the World. This is the twelfth edition, and the book has gone through many changes over the years. It was originally authored by Lewis Hopfe, a dedicated teacher and scholar whose vision for teaching the World Religions course combined a sense of history with an appreciation of keeping the subject alive by focusing on contemporary trends in religions and the role of religion in world affairs.

In the editions I have edited, and sections of the book that I have rewritten, I have done the best that I can to retain this perspective. I continue to include both primary texts and first hand accounts of what is now called "lived religion" or somewhat less pretentiously "religion and everyday life. In fact, I explore these "living religions" in terms of the historical and cultural factors that produced them, the lives of their founders, their basic teachings, and their historical development and current status in the world.

I have been fortunate enough to have lived in many parts of the world and to have had the chance to interact with people from most of the religious traditions discussed in the book. These experiences have had a major impact on almost every chapter, especially those concerned with contemporary religious life. It is also apparent in original photographs that I have used whenever possible.

Another unique feature of this book is frank and honest discussion of the issue of religion and violence. I think that there is no escaping this issue and that our students will hold us accountable if we do not help them to understand how it is that people of many, indeed almost all, faiths can use religion to motivate or excuse violence and the dehumanization of others.

Good, but not Golden
By Steve G. Declaisse-walford
While the content of this book is quite good, there are many other World Religions books with equally good content that cost substantially less. I have taught topics in the field of Religion and Philosophy for more than twelve years, and have watched as the cost of textbooks has soared. Sympathetic to my students, I carefully review many texts for their content versus their price, and only assign those texts that are inexpensive and yet adequately cover the material. This book does not qualify. Rather, it appears to be an egregious attempt to separate funds from students.

For all students of world history, religion, and plain curiosity
By Linda Covey
I ordered this book in a search to find a textbook that would adequately cover most world religions for my Asian students, in a more understandable and simple style. This textbook does do that, and adds in African religions and basic/Native American/indigenous religions, as well. What is rather unique about this book is how its authors organized it. The world religions (and there is a difference between world religions and religions of the world) are organized according to the geographical area that they arose in. This gives the reader a different point of view, rather than simply going by the historical date of appearance. An example is: "Religions Originating in India", which allows the reader to 'map' the world religiously, and not just by the better known religions but by whatever religion appears in that specific geographical area. Each chapter has an inset of the dominant religion for that region, i.e., "Timeline of Hinduism". Another unique addition is an inset titled "Religion and Violence". This might give a clue as to the authors' mindset (perhaps a bit biased?) but it still is valid and useful information--and true. Another nice feature is "From the Source" so the authors supplies their readers with direct material, all in one place, an example of that religion's teachings. The plentiful, colorful pictures are outstanding additions, the most I've seen in most any religious textbook. Each section ends with study questions and suggested readings. I like this book, however, I'm disappointed that, when revising the text for this second edition, the authors list the newest world religion, the Baha'i Faith, as a "web bonus chapter". Readers have to go to [...] My question is why? The Baha'i Faith was the final chapter in the first edition. Because of this, and because of an underlying 'tone' indicating a vague negativity, I chose not to use this textbook for my students, but rather I use it as reference material. Unfortunately, the first edition is now out of print.

Religions ofthe world 12th editon
By Jeremy Churchwell
This textbook was very useful for my online course. I myself have gained alot of knowlege on other religions that I was not fully familiar with. The style of the text is not over my head and I was able to under tand and better grasp the concepts of the book and my current class. I understand the book is a brand new edition put it could have been maybe 20 or 30 dollars cheaper considering it is a paperback textbook.
