Psychology plain and simple

This book has everything a student could need for the study of abnormal psychology. It's organised, readable, and accurate. The case studies really bring it all together in "real world" examples. The only caution I would give is that the 10th addition has some major changes from the 9th, so make sure, if you are using it for a class, that it's the edition the rest of your class is using.

Excellent and easy to read

As the college instructor who chose this textbook, I find this book to be one of the most enjoyed by my students. They find it easy to read, interesting, and informative.
The study guide makes the wide subject area easy to comprehend. While both books are expensive, if you are a student of psychology, these are almost "Must Haves".

Can'ts see the benefit of having to bind my own book. Very easy to loose pages because they get ripped out on accident flipping through. I suspect this is an attempt to curb used book sell. Get a proper binded version.

My kids love this book! They have read several parts aloud in the car, to the guffaws and chuckles of the audience. (They also took care to reassure their younger sibling that it wasn't really too scary.) They delighted in the pictures and clever descriptions. They have in turn each taken it to their rooms to peruse during quiet time, and then taken it again after finishing it once. My oldest kid is also loving the Wingfeather stories. (I am loving the Wingfeather stories, too!)

My girls loved stopping after every other chapter to look at the sketches of any creature that we encountered in the pages of the series. My eight year old daughter is fascinated with this book, and loves being able to fill in some imagination blanks of the creatures in the Wingfeather Saga. You never know when you might need your kids to recognize a thwap so they can catch it and toss it in the neighbors yard. :) Great companion to a great series.

Nochimson has had a distinguished academic career, teaching at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and serving at Mercy College as the creator and first Chair of the film program. expensive and worthwhile

Initially, you need a film school groupie's dictionary to get through the first bit, where all the predictable psychobabble film study nonsense is addressed-but once she gets to the meat of the later Lynch works, there's some great ideas here. I don't know if I like her take on mulholland drive, or if it's too multiversal for my taste-but she sure does shine a light on INLAND EMPIRE, which has been quite a stumbling block in the Lynch canon for me personally. Good stuff. The Lynch interview excerpts at the end are very brief, so don't expect the holy grail of candid comments here. The interview with the physicist is illuminating. Be nice if this brief study were priced more reasonably.

Amazing and New

David Lynch's films resist easy categorization and analysis. They're ambitious, ambiguous, and by turns beautiful and discomforting. Martha Nochimson has delved deeper than any critic has into his work. Using the theoretical framework of modern quantum physics and Vedic philosophy - both gently explained so that non-scientists/non-philosophers can understand what she's talking about - Nochimson does a careful, close reading of "Inland Empire," "The Straight Story," "Mulholland Drive," and "Lost Highway," and the results will surprise you. Rather than seeing some dark vision of the world, Nochimson reveals Lynch to be an incredible, energetic optimist. This is well worth the read. Also pick up her earlier "Passion of David Lynch" for its discussion of Lynch's earlier works. The two books complement each other really well, each offering different insights into one of the most important filmmakers of our time.
