Pam Saulsby is an Emmy-award winning television news journalist. She has worked as a news reporter and anchor since 1981, working in specialized areas of news reporting, including health, crime, children, and currently military matters. She has been recognized nationally and locally for excellence in Journalism, having received three regional Emmy Awards, and one National Emmy award. This year she received a Presidential Award for Volunteerism and the use of her personal video camera to produce news stories about military members and their families. Pam was named one of the top Women in Business in The Triangle Area. She was recognized by the state of North Carolina and honored with a Woman of the Year Award in Business. Pam has recorded two albums. Her most recent “Holding It Down” is a collection of tunes that salute the troops. She is donating a portion of the sales of the CD to Fort Bragg Fisher House. It is a home away from home for families whose loved ones are being treated at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

High Five for Ashley!

I just read Ashley's High Five for Daddy and loved it! In addition to being a Marine, I am the daughter of a retired Marine and former wife of a Marine who was in combat during the Gulf War. I remember when my husband came home having to explain to my boys, who were around 4 and 7 at that time, why their dad occasionally had difficulty being around crowds and a lot of noise. I wish I had this book back then; it would have made it much easier to explain to my young sons. Thank you, Pam, for offering such an accurate, thoughtful book for children. High five!

While "Ashley's High Five for Daddy" is written with our military in mind, I found that the book can help any parent with a young child to have a better understanding of a parent who's dealing with a stressful situation. Children know when parents are not in a good mood or when something is not "quite right." "Ashley's High Five for Daddy" is a reminder that the kids will be all right as long as they're given the tools to understand that they're still loved and important in their parent's/parents' life/lives. Ms. Saulsby wrote an insightful, easy to read book that should be on every child's book-shelf. This book matters!!

I recommend this book!

I enjoyed the storyline and lovely illustrations. I am certain many families have experienced the same wonderful, and yet, scary feelings about their returning Soldier’s behavior. Although, “Ashley’s High Five for Daddy,” is about a serious subject, it is such a joyful story. You can feel the love and excitement the family and neighbors have for their Soldier and that he is happy to be home. I recommend this book as a nice story for both the child and family of the returning Solider.

Since 1996, he has been a product test for Ski and Skiing magazines, and he helps teach professional bootfitting seminars for Masterfit University. He has written articles for Skiing, The Professional Skier, and many other travel and sports publications.

A resource for the advanced skier

This book is great. A beginner or even an intermediate may find much of the information to be too advanced to be useful. Advanced skiers should find it to be an excellent resource.
The book, among other things emphasizes the importance of steering, espescially in the important transition phase between turns. (Intermediate and even advanced skiers who learn how to edge effectively, often abandon their steering skills and simply step from the outside edge of one ski to the outside edge of the other ski.) The mechanics of effective steering are explained well as is the importance of the skill in more difficult terrain.
Fundamentals are emphasized. The modifications and different blends of skills which are required on moguls, powder, crud, steeps, ice and in the trees are also explained very well.

It is roughly two-hundred pages, yet it breaks down the essentials of making good turns, contains an in-depth look at each ski equipment and how to maintain it, and breaks down special techniques for various snow conditions (powder, moguls, etc). If this isn't enough, there is a more technical section at the end for serious ski freaks. This is nuts. I also have the book, "Ski the Whole Mountain", and it probably has only half the information this book has.
At first glance, you may not like this book because it is black and white and not as flashy as "Ski the Whole Mountain". Also, most of the pictures are hand-drawn illustrations. However, upon reading it, you will be hypnotized and the black and white illustrations seem to almost come alive. It is testimony to the fine writing by the author.
If you ever want to ski moguls, this is the book. For years, I look at expert mogul skiers go down and I keep saying to myself that they must have some special paths they follow but I just don't know what. Well, this book draws the path, the moguls, the works!
This is an amazing book and probably the only book you need to ski like a pro. But I read "The Skier's Edge", and that book actually contains even more technical information (if that's possible) so you may want to check that one as well.

Great approach to all-terrain skiing

Highly recommended book for any skier who aspires to the Holy Grail of being able to ski in all kinds of terrain, in any condition. This book is most suitable for intermediate to advanced skiiers who are hoping to make the progression to all-terrain skier one day.
It's often very difficult to pay attention to all of the different skills needed to ski well at the same time. Mr. Elling uses a "toolbox" approach to break down each skill, and recommends specific drills to strengthen one's abilities in each skill.
Where this book really shines, though, is Elling's explanation of how these different skills should be combined in order to tackle different types of terrain and/or snow condition. Many ski instruction books out there are written with the goal of teaching you how to ski expertly...on perfectly groomed snow. But the skills that apply to Eastern hardpack/ice (edging, pressure on single ski, etc.) do not apply to Utah powder (even weighting on both skis) and Mr. Elling spells out the differences better than anyone else I have come across.
Also a useful section on ski equipment and boot fit that correctly drives home how important good boot fit is to effective skiing.
Overall an excellent book that anyone who wants to stray off the corduroy should take a look at.

About the Author
Ismail Tsieprati is a former film and video editor, producer, director, and writer with more than 25 years of experience in the film and video business. He has written dozens of screenplays and has extensive educational film credits. Ismail was presented with a special citation from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Building and Safety, for playing an instrumental role in the initial production of the Department's training video series. In 2003, Ismail was presented with the ALS March of Faces Vice President's ALS Awareness and Advocacy Award for his outstanding achievements in raising public awareness of ALS. Although he is totally paralyzed and no longer able to speak or write, Ismail communicates by blinking his eyes to spell out sentences one word at a time. Using this method, he writes posts and blogs for social media and collaborates with Cheryl on musical theatre and other writing projects. He wrote chapters for this book by spelling out each word one blink at a time. Cheryl Tsieprati worked in the health care industry for nearly 40 years. She has more than 25 years of experience in training consulting, instructional design, writing, and editing. As a freelance journalist, she received a first place award from the Associated Press, Western Region for her work on a newspaper series Retailing in the '80s. Cheryl also received an award for a comprehensive seminar she developed and facilitated for individual s with neuromuscular diseases and their family caregivers. She enjoys working on creative projects with Ismail, her husband of 44 years, being an ALS advocate, and collaborating on new musicals as book writer or lyricist. Together, as co-owners of a video production company in the early 1990s, Cheryl and Ismail wrote and produced several promotional and educational videotapes, including It's Your Choice, a 26-minute educational video produced in 1991 which presents information and options to people facing respiratory failure. In 1993, Ismail and Cheryl wrote and produced Caring for the Caregiver, a 28-minute educational video with accompanying training materials for family caregivers, and What is ALS?, an informational video for the National ALS Association.

Beautifully written story of hope and courage

An absolutely touching story of hope, love, laughter and triumphs. Ismail reminds us all, with or without ALS, that life is worth living and fighting for in the face of a lifetime of challenges and obstacles. Cheryl, Ismail's wife, has stood steadfast by his side through the hardship of seeing her husband's physical body deteriorate whilst still cherishing the the love and promise they made to each other on their wedding day 44 years ago. Together they have written an exceptional, one of a kind book that describes their love and their life together and how they were able to tough it out despite recieving such a devastating diagnosis 30 years ago.

Wow - It's a Love Story!

OK, so I know this easy and enjoyable read is a practical guide for anyone wanting to know about ALS or living with it. BUT this is so much more.

Cheryl and Ismail's transparent and vulnerable storytelling is exactly what I needed. They look at life with gratitude and joy. Challenges are just one more thing to enjoy solving. Yes, I said, "Enjoy." This attitude prevails throughout their entire love story. One day at a time, one problem at a time, and in between the problems - a lovely, full, beautiful life with each other.

I needed this book. I don't have any debilitating disease, nor do I care for someone who does. But I will be reading this story again. And probably buying it for niece or nephew or two. Because at the heart of their message, the reason behind all their choices is this: their dreams, my dreams, all of our dreams are worth the job of living in order to reach out for them. Thank you Ismail and Cheryl for this gift you gave me.
