Heartwarming story!

When a beautiful cardinal falls from a branch of a newly planted apple tree and is trapped in deep snow on Christmas Eve, Nicholas and his grandfather retrieve the cardinal and care for it until it's strong enough to fly. Grandfather Santos is from Mexico and he talks to Nicholas about the cardinals from his home. When Nicholas is an adult and his grandfather is long gone, each Christmas Eve the branches of the apple tree are filled with a grand surprise.

Christmas Eve Blizzard is a lovely story of a grandfather sharing his past and a child who puts the welfare of a bird before his own. The illustrations are beautiful and children will long to touch the pictures.

At the back of the book is a "Creative Minds" section and it is filled with information about bird trivia, what to do if you find an injured bird, how to make a bird feeder, etc. Recommended for ages 4-8.

Armchair Interviews says: Parents--read the book and then pick an activity to do with your children. It will be entertaining and educational. And most importantly, you will be having a great time together

Christmas Eve Blizzard

This story unfolds as Nicholas and his grandpa are looking out the window at an apple tree they planted seven months ago. Nicholas is concerned that it is not strong enough to withstand the first snow of this Christmas season. Nicholas refers to his grandpa as Abuelo (grandpa). Abuelo assures Nicholas that the tree was well planted and will survive for years to come.

As he looks out the window Nicholas sees a red bird tumble off an apple branch onto a high drift of snow. Hurriedly putting on his coat, boots, hat and two scarves, he runs out into the storm. With the snow pelting his face, he pushes forward one step at a time. The bird is not moving and is almost covered with snow. He quickly wraps the cold bird in his extra scarf and hurries back to the house.

"I should be very angry, for going out in the blizzard," said grandpa. "Muy enojado, for going out in this blizzard." "Pequeno pajaro pobre- poor little bird." Grandpa builds a temporary cage for the cardinal, and Nichols adds a bowl of water and some seed. Grandpa tells Nicholas that his grandfather used to say, "When you do a good thing, good will come back to you."

The next morning the cardinal was hopping around in his cage and trying to fly out. It's time to release the bird so he can find his way home. "Merry Christmas," Nicholas whispers as the cardinal flies away. Years later people come from miles around to marvel at the wonder of Nicholas' apple tree, for every Christmas the branches are covered not with apples but with bright red cardinals.

Introduce your child to a few Spanish words while teaching him/her that good deeds are rewarded.

A Lovely Book That Evokes Feelings of Nostalgia

There are certain books that evoke emotion in us. Usually, it's because of nostalgia. We associate certain things with various times in our lives. When I happened to stumble upon Christmas Eve Blizzard, by Andrea Vlahakis, I felt a surge of nostalgia, for my own childhood, my own discoveries, and my own relationships with nature and with my grandparents.

Christmas Eve Blizzard is a beautifully written book. The messages in the book are appropriate for all ages. The illustrations, by Emanuel Schongut, delicately portray the harsh conditions of the storm and tell the tale in pictures as effectively as it is told in words.

Additionally, this book contains various phrases in Spanish. Nicholas refers to his grandpa as "abuelo," and they each intermingle a few Spanish words within the text. The words and phrases are identified within the book and are also included in a glossary in the back of the book.

The thing that makes Sylvan Dell books so unique is that they each contain a Creative Minds section in the back of the book. For educators, this information provides a wealth of classroom activity ideas. For moms and dads, this information is a great way to expand your child's knowledge and to learn various crafts you can do at home to teach your child about birds.

About the Author

Robert W. Palmatier is Professor of Marketing, and he holds the John C. Narver Chair of Business Administration at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. He is also the founder and research director of UW’s Center for Sales and Marketing Strategy, and Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.

Hari Sridhar is the Center for Executive Development Professor of Marketing at Texas A&M University, Associate Research Director, and Director of Customer Analytics at the Institute for Study of Business Markets (ISBM), and a winner of the Varadarajan Award for Early Career Contributions to Marketing Strategy Research.

About the Author
A native of California, Amanda S. Barusch completed her B.A. in Psychology at Reed College and her M.S.W. and Ph.D. in Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. Her primary research and teaching interests are in the fields of social policy and aging. She has investigated topics ranging from interpersonal relations to international policy comparisons. She has published articles in leading North American journals and is the author or coauthor of seven books. Dr. Barusch joined the faculty at the University of Utah College of Social Work in 1985. She has served as Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies (2003-2007) and Director of the Social Research Institute (1995-1998); and is now Associate Dean for Research. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Poverty. She is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. Since June of 2007 she has also held an appointment as Professor of Gerontology at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, where she continues to serve on a part-time basis.

Joining the CIA
Our group of five--three men and two women--trekked through an empty tract of wooded land and swamp, known in CIA terms as the "Farm." It was 4 a.m. and we had been on the move all night. Having practiced escape and evasion from an ostensible hostile force--our instructors--we were close to meeting up with our other classmates. Together we would attack the enemy, then board a helicopter to safety. This exercise, called the final assault, was the climax of our paramilitary training. Each of us carried eighty-pound backpacks, filled with essential survival gear: tents, freeze-dried food, tablets to purify drinking water, and 5.56 mm ammunition for our M-16s. The late fall weather was bitter, and slimy water sloshed in our combat boots. A blister on my heel radiated little jabs of stinging pain. My friend Pete, a former Army officer, usually ready with a wisecrack and a smirk, hadn't spoken in hours, while John, our resident beer guzzler, carried not only his backpack but at least fifty extra pounds of body weight. His round face was covered with mud and sweat.

The government redacted much of the significant information in the first section of Wilson's memoir, which concerns her career in the CIA. In print, a black bar omitted the words and passages; on audio, a tone does the deleting. Once the novelty of the beeps wears off, the incompleteness of Wilson's narrative, at first tantalizing, becomes frustrating. The constant interruptions make it difficult for a listener to assemble a coherent story. Once Wilson's identity is leaked by White House insiders, the memoir's redactions cease for the most part. Unfortunately, her distress over the attempted destruction of her and her husband's professional reputations is considerably less riveting than her spy career. Whiles neither a prose stylist or an actress, Wilson reads clearly, with immediacy and sincerity and a note of barely suppressed anger. Laura Rozen's afterword (occupying the last two CDs) fills in the gaps removed by the CIA. It's intriguing and considerably more polished. The two narratives create an interesting, if not entirely satisfying, account of a disturbing contemporary scandal.

A lot is missing due to censorship but still worth the read

A great deal of information is missing from this book due to CIA censorship. That is why I only give it three stars. Hard to believe that much editing was necessary. Nevertheless, I could still follow the story although it was aggravating at times.
I was outside the U.S. When most of these events took place so didn't follow it too well. Now, I only feel outrage about how nasty politics and government can be. What happened to Valerie Plame Wilson is out and out treason in my way of thinking, Hurtful not only to her but to the entire nation as well. And Bush, Cheney and cronies got away with it all unscathed for the most part. Sickening.
A real injustice was done here. I'm from the Vietnam era, and Vietnam made me lose faith and confidence in the American government. What happened in the Plame-Wilson case does nothing to restore that faith. I still love my country but will always feel mistrustful of government.

What the Bleep?

This is a vital story that needs to be told. For the first time in recent history, the lives of loyal Americans and the people in other countries they worked with were put at risk solely for the benefit of a political agenda.

Two solid Americans were doing their duty--one, Valerie Plame, as a covert operative for the CIA and the other, her husband Joe WIlson, having served as an ambassador for the State Department--are used as political fodder because the contents of a report Joe Wilson wrote failed to support the political agenda of those occupying the White House.

White House operatives at the highest levels worked behind the scenes--often using members of the media too desperate for sensationalized stories--to destroy the careers and lives of both Valerie Plame and her husband Joe WIlson.

Much of the story has been played out in the media but hearing it directly from Valerie Plame is a part of the story that seems to have been missing from the news stories.

While the book is interesting, it became very distracting on the CDs to listen to the bleeped out sections of her text that were redacted by the CIA. Even though there's an independent explanation at the end delineating these redactions that Ms. Plame could not legally include, it was distracting nonetheless. Even with the CIA finally stepping in to protect some of their own (after throwing her under the bus), I would have thought there might be a way to amend the text to get most of the message across without the bleeps on the CDs or the blacked out sections in the book.

An Eye Opener!!!

Excellent read, another book I read in a couple days tops. It is intense so I have read it two times for the reality of such vitriolic actions placed on a family that put their lives in harms way for our country. To be betrayed so blatantly and publicly you will be able to read the truth for yourself and you can not just make this kind of stuff up. It is an excellent read, the redacted parts you can more or less fiquire out by just reading carefully and it falls into place. Shame to find that OUR Government will turn their backs on their own. No not in my mind who has lied and who is speaking the truth. God Bless the Plame Wilson Family, may they hold their heads HIGH!

Amazing Book!

This is one of the best books I've read about authority as a Christian. The author takes the bible and breaks it down in a way that you can relate to in this day and age. The biggest complaint I hear about the bible is that it was written forever ago, it doesn't apply to how we live today, but this book helps to show just how much things really haven't changed over the years. If you want to know why Jesus Christ died for you, what that really means and why it's so significant, read this book!

This is a Game Changer!

This book changed my prayer life! I was able to implement the lessons before I was even half way through it, and it changed my life.
And the author, Gene Herndon, writes with style and humor, so it's not like reading a text book.
If you want to really get your faith moving, this book will get it going.
I'm not one to give all pros and no cons in reviews, so the con is I wish it was written sooner!

Un gran ebook!! MUY RECOMENDABLE!

Llevaba mucho tiempo buscando un libro que me orientara de forma sencilla sobre c�mo montar, organizar y poner en marcha un estudio fotogr�fico en mi hogar.

La mayor�a de libros eran demasiado complejos y dif�ciles de entender. Gracias a este libro de Amber Richards pude solventar todas mis dudas y aprender de manera f�cil y eficaz los mecanismos y pasos necesarios para poder poner en pr�ctica todas estas t�cnicas.

Me ha gustado mucho la forma en que se desarrollan los contenidos. Aparte de lo puramente te�rico, en el libro te explican casos reales y tambi�n te plantean los problemas que suelen aparecer mientras est�s trabajando con sus correspondientes soluciones.

Es un libro que plasma muy bien todo lo que necesitas para ser un buen fot�grafo de estudio y como desarrollar esa labor en tu propia casa. Montar un estudio se convierte en una tarea sencilla y divertida gracias a este libro.

Enhorabuena a Amber Richards porque firma un muy buen libro. Lo recomiendo a cualquier persona que sea una apasionada de la fotograf�a de estudio. Personalmente me ha sorprendido gratamente y le pondr�a una nota de SOBRESALIENTE.

Informaci�n �til y f�cil de asimilar

Amber Richards tiene una gran capacidad para entregar informaci�n �til de forma resumida, aunque tambi�n muy completa. Este libro puede ser muy �til para aquellas personas interesadas en crear un negocio basado en la fotograf�a. Un negocio de fotograf�a puede ser una excelente opci�n para obtener ingresos extra o para desarrollarlo como un proyecto de negocios m�s grande. Despu�s de leer este libro descubr� que la fotograf�a no solo se trata de una buena c�mara con flash. Existen muchos m�s componentes y conceptos a considerar si quieres hacer algo serio en este camino.

Decent book, but I own better ones

I am a custom carpenter in the metro Detroit area, and am addicted to trim books. I use them to come up with and/or show ideas to my customers. As a result I have a large library. I picked up this book hoping to find something new. Its title is a little bit misleading, and I think they stretched the truth a little bit with their claim of 1001 Ideas. There are a lot of details pictured in the book, but I think too many of the 1001 are together in one picture (room) that is too small to highlight each idea. I own much better books, and find myself going to them far more often than this book when looking for new ideas or solutions for my customers' spaces. Don't get me wrong, the book is not a terrible book. It just does not live up to the title in my oppinion, and as I wrote above, I own better books on trimwork. Check out my other reviews for titles.

This is definitely a "big picture" idea book. Lots of pictures to give you ideas about how you can use trim, as well as some design tips and discussions of using trim, the use of colors and such. My only real complaint is that I wish there were more closeups so I could see more detail on the trim used in some of the rooms.

It's not at all a guide for installing trim, which makes the brief chapter covering the tools used to install trim seem a bit out of place. But I wanted trim ideas and this has them, and at a reasonable price. There are plenty of books that discuss installing trim.
