An Extraordinary Firsthand Account of History
By Amazon Customer
This is an amazing first-hand account of the last years of the reign of Porfirio Diaz. Turner saw the horrendous circumstances in which the Mexican people were living and dying. An especially brutal form of slavery, which was practiced by landowners, was actively supported by local, state, and the federal government. The military and police were also actively engaged in recruiting and transporting human beings for the slave trade.

Turner did not spare us the gory details of the brutality invoved. While slavery as practiced in the US was bad, this was many times worse. Slaves were not simply maltreated but in many cases were worked literally to death. Thousands of indigenous people suffered and died, but since money was to be made at every level, practically no citizen was safe from being shipped off to a mine or plantation, never to be heard from again.

Frankly, some of this material is difficult to read, but the truth is often not pretty. The author simply reported what he saw. Sadly, the US authorities not only did not act to relieve the suffering of the masses but instead continued to support the US-based corporations that were reaping huge profits alongside and with the blessing of the Diaz regime.

Turner was the ultimate in-depth reporter. He risked his life repeatedly to bring this bone-chilling story to light. This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of Mexico and for those who want to understand how its current system of neglect, abuse, and corruption began.

Amazing book and incredible journey of courage by a serious ...
By Margaret Tibbets
Amazing book and incredible journey of courage by a serious radical journalist at the turn of the 20th Century. Try to find a historical copy from around 1910 or a version published by Professor Snow in 1969. The forward by Snow is wonderful, and gives the reader a real insight into Turner as a man, and the challenges he faced. A man who came from a large family of Oregon Trail Pioneers from Portland, Oregon, who left Kentucky because of the blight of slavery. Adventurous as a youth, and ultimately embroiled in and reporting on the Mexican Revolution. Captured and imprisoned during the 10 tragic days of the Revolution in 1913, and lived to tell the tale. Later, one of the early settlers of the artist colony in Carmel by the Sea. Married twice...first to author an fellow "precursor" of the Mexican Revolution, Ethel Duffy Turner, and then to author Adriana Spadoni. Many may not know that John Kenneth Turner has an equally famous younger brother...Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner-the "Alligator of the Pacific", and commander of the 5th amphibious fleet in WWII. Admiral Turner is also credited with founding the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), which was a precursor to today's Navy Seals. Two amazing brotherswho lived a great deal of history in the first half of the 20th century, and knew a great many of the most important characters of the time.

The appearance of this is distracting from an otherwise well-written book
By Al
I have to agree with the previous reviewer that the presentation of this material is badly dogged by its appearance. This is unfortunate because, as you strugle to "fill in the blanks" where the text is garbled, it takes much longer to understand what the author was trying to say. One of the worst ebooks that I have ever tried to read. However, because the author was so descriptive of Mexico in the early 1900's, I may try to find a hard copy just to better understand the story.
