Is Complementary and Integrative Medicine Cost-Effective? In September 2012, Patricia Herman, ND, PhD, Senior Behavior Scientist in the Health Division of the RAND Corporation and Senior Fellow at Samueli Institute, published a study summarizing what is known about the cost-effectiveness of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM). The study, published in the British Medical Journal Open Access (BMJ Open), was a comprehensive systematic review of 338 economic evaluations published between 1979 and 2012 that reported on the costs and effectiveness of CIM, including tai chi to prevent hip fractures, manual therapy for neck pain and acupuncture during pregnancy. Of the 56 comparisons made in the higher quality studies, 16 (29 percent) were cost saving, a higher percentage than found in reviews of conventional medicine. In parallel with this study, Dr. Herman and the Samueli Institute produced this handbook to help researchers apply proper economic methods to the evaluation of CIM. The book will also be useful to medical practitioners, hospital administrators, policy makers, and others interested in understanding the basics, uses and limitations of economic evaluation, for healthcare in general and CIM in particular. “Sharing research like Dr. Herman’s is essential for health care reform. Through this study and Dr. Herman’s new book, it’s evident that lowering the cost of health care while simultaneously increasing the level of care is the way forward,” said Wayne B. About the Author
Dr. Herman is a National Institute of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine-trained research methodologist, a resource economist, and a licensed practicing naturopathic doctor. She has been an economist for more than 30 years and in this role she was invited to co-author a commissioned paper on the economics of integrative medicine for the Institute of Medicine’s 2009 Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public, has served on National Institute of Health review panels, was an invited speaker at the Office of Dietary Supplement’s workshop on the Economic Analysis of Nutrition Interventions: Methods, Research and Policy, and was an invited participant in the Economic Toolkit Expert Panel Conference held January 2011 at RAND Corporation for Samueli Institute. She has been the methodologist and economist for a number of research studies; has been responsible for dozens of cost-effectiveness analyses across a number of disciplines, including a number of cost-effectiveness analyses of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM); has written three books on the methods involved in economic evaluation; has taught more than 100 workshops on the topic; and has completed two systematic reviews of economic evaluations of CIM. Her training and experience in research methodology includes statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, econometrics, psychometrics, and program evaluation as well as general and whole systems research design and health services research methods. www.SamueliInstitute.org

As integrative medicine becomes more popular among patients, health care providers, and health care systems, there is an increasing need to rigorously measure the potential cost impact of these therapies. Herman's book provides an outstanding in depth overview of this area of research, ideal for integrative medicine researchers, health care payers, policy experts, and government leaders.
