About the Author
Peter de S�ve is one of America's foremost contemporary illustrators. Beginning his career as an editorial illustrator in the early eighties, de S�ve has gone on to create artwork that has graced the covers and interiors of countless major publications, books, and posters. He has also played an influential role in the design of numerous animated feature films, including the blockbuster Ice Age series.

Amid Amidi is a writer and historian. He has written and edited five books, including The Art of Pixar Short Films, The Art of Robots, and Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in Fifties Animation, which won the 2006 Theatre Library Association Award. He is also the co-founder of the leading animation industry blog CartoonBrew.com, and he distributes award-winning animated shorts through Cartoon Brew TV. He lives in Manhattan.

Chris Wedge is the director of Ice Age, Robots, and the Academy Award®-winning short Bunny, is co-founder and vice president of creative development at Blue Sky Studios. Most recently, he executive-produced Horton Hears a Who! and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. He also directed the character animation sequences for the Warner Bros./Geffen Films production Joe's Apartment and has supervised the creative teams for several other feature-length films. He lives in Katonah, New York, with his family.

He is one of the most highly sought-after illustrators today, though he rarely has the time to indulge or refl ect on that success. At any given moment, de S�ve is juggling multiple projects for clients that range from book and magazine publishers to animation studios, and often he can be found working in his home studio into the wee hours of the morning. He is in high demand because there are few artists who can do what he does: insightful, evocative illustration that achieves its effect without graphic tricks or gimmickry. His approach is unapologetically classical, and it is clear from his work that de S�ve relishes, above all else, solid draftsmanship, characterization, and storytelling. He has a keen eye for capturing the mannerisms of characters, both human and animal. The de S�ve touch may be no more than a subtle tilt of the head, a quirky off-balance pose, or an exaggeration of a facial feature, but those expressive penwork flourishes are all that is needed. His characters inhabit a world that is believable as our own, yet at the same time out of reach, colored with a natural sense of fun, warmth, and humanity.

Brilliant

That's the description of an illustration "Hare Mary" published in The New York Times Magazine, one of the many publications to be graced by Peter de Seve's wonderful and humorous art work. Peter de Seve likes to use fairy tales or animals as metaphorical devices to enliven otherwise dry material. Not only are the drawings good, the ideas are also fantastic, probably why his work is liked by so many.

A Sketchy Past is a 240-page collection of some of his finest work, all watercoloured unless noted, and lots of fun sketches. They are lovely and timeless.

His portfolio is amazing. He has created art for The New Yorker, Disney, Blue Sky Studios, even the Totoro Forest Project and more. There are sketches from his personal sketchbooks, drafts for his magazine work and commissioned projects, like the character designs he did for Ice Age, Finding Nemo, etc.

This book is a quality publication by Akileos. It's large and measures about 16 inches diagonally. The illustrations are gloriously reproduced on thick low gloss paper, making the book slightly hefty. It's designed to draw a smile of satisfaction on your face.

Other than the beautiful art work, there's also an foreword by Chris Wedge (director of Ice Age) and introduction by Amid Amidi. The introduction is actually a nice long biography about Peter de Seve. It's filled with nice details. You can read about his schooling years, his childhood heroes -- Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Mummy -- or how he built his own studio and the type of books that fill his shelves, or his relationship with people he work with. There are also stories about his love and work for animation, most notably Ice Age where he designed all the characters.

This is definitely one of the best art books for 2009.

The man can draw--pure and simple!

Peter deS�ve is arguably the best illustrator of his generation and will be remembered as one of the greats in history and this book puts his immense talent on full display. The man can draw--pure and simple. But what makes his artwork truly exceptional, beyond the exquisite draftsmanship, is the combination of uncanny and deeply felt senses of humanity and humor he is able to infuse into his illustrations. I have admired his work for years, waiting expectantly for his next New Yorker cover to arrive in my mailbox. Each is like a surprise gift and every one has made me smile. I sometimes wonder how many professional illustrators there are out there--very talented ones no less--who feel themselves playing Salieri to deS�ve's Mozart, both admiring and resentful of his talent. But it is likely not anyone who knows him personally. In the book's Foreword, Chris Wedge (director of the Ice Age movies for which deS�ve designed the characters) writes "...He really is that funny and that clever, and he really does have a heart that big." For anyone interested in illustration this book is a must for your library. It is also a great gift if you just want to bring a smile to someone's face. excellent book by exceptional artist

Artist, Pete de Seve is probably today's greatest illustrator and one of the best of all time. He's done everything of significance from Time and New Yorker covers to Disney and Pixar movies. This book is outstanding with high quality illustration reproductions. A great addition to the collection and a forever keepsake!

About the Author
Russell Kirkland is Associate Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at the University of Georgia. He is a member of the executive board of the Society for the Study of Chinese Religions, and of the board of directors of the U.S. Taoist Association. Real Taoism

I have been trying for awhile to find accurate treatments of Taoism from actual scholars (not hacks who know nothing of Chinese history, religion, culture, or language - but have no problem filling the shelves at Barnes and Noble with fatuous fluff). This is an excellent book that not only covers the origins and development of Taoism from the perspective of the "Taoists" themselves (not from the perspective of Westerners who received most of their knowledge from often adversarial Confucians), but it even has an excellent section on "Cultivating the Tao" for those who are interested in putting Taoist traditions into practice.

Great exerpt:

"In the 20th Century West, Taoist practice was deeply misunderstood my narcissistic pseudo-Taoists, who falsely imagined that 'following the Tao' requires no more than 'going with the flow' or 'just being spontaneous.' To the contrary, Taoist practice traditionally rested upon self-discipline as 'the foundation that sets up the basic framework of mind and body in which alone the hard work of the path can be accomplished." (p. 202)

Check the references for other excellent sources on Taoism.

(Please remember that this is an academic source, so don't think you are going to read the "Tao of Poo" and then give the book a bad review when you see the big words. If you want something dumbed down, look elsewhere.)

Criticism of Taoist Scholarship

I bought this book because it had great reviews and it's hard to find good material on the practices and texts of Taoism beyond the level of Tao of Pooh and Taoism for Dummies. But upon reading this torture of a text I found the other reviewers must have had different interests than mine, for what I've found in the book is a state-of-the-union address on Taoist scholarship (mainly how 19th and 20th century translators have not taken into consideration this or that text or aspect of Chinese history) but as to a rigorous explanation of the different practices and beliefs of Taoists there is not much to go on in this book. The author seems more interested in showing off his scholarship of Chinese thought and presenting what Taoism IS NOT than of telling us what those texts he so profusely cites say about what Taoism IS.

Treasure and tool

In modern world only few learners of Taoism are blessed with a real teacher. The rest of us have to get by books, articles and similar sources. Unfortunately we quickly learn that there is a huge, stinky sewage of books by "experts" among which we are to seek for rare pearls.

This book is not only one of such pearls, it also teaches to deal with the sewage, to distinguish real scholarship from New Age "interpretations".

Yes, it is not an easy read because it is written more like research article, but if you are interested in essence of Taoist beliefs and philosophy this book absolutely worth the time you'll spend to read it.

But if you really believe that LeGuin is a Taoist then do not bother with this book.

Must Have For SuccessFactors Administrators!

I just finished reading SuccessFactors with SAP ERP HCM by Amy Grubb, Luke Marson and Jyoti Sharma and wanted to share very positive feedback with this group! This is a must read book for those in the SuccessFactors world; it is a very comprehensive overview of SuccessFactors including integration and implementation aspects, Cloud software considerations, overview of the complete BizX suite (including the Mobile app), Metadata Framework extensibility, user interface and navigation aspects, SAP Add-Ons and so much more valuable information. The book covers the full range of SuccessFactors modules and is written in a very clear and competent manner. Although technical by nature, the book is invaluable to those that are addicted (like me!) to configuration and implementation aspects of SuccessFactors and most importantly, ensuring customer and end user satisfaction.

If you are planning a SuccessFactors implementation, Amy, Luke and Jyoti offer a detailed introduction to SuccessFactors with valid implementation considerations and strategic thoughts for planning and rolling out a business process, preparing appropriately and identifying involvement needed and by whom to insure realization of delivery and a successful launch. This 500 page book has a tremendous wealth of information that is vastly needed in today's SuccessFactors and SAP universe and I highly recommend it to administrators that are new as well as those experienced, consultants and anyone that is involved in the SaaS and Cloud worlds. Most notably, she is a former Presidential Innovation Fellow and co-founded a technology organization in government called 18F. Her career has consisted of many data science and wrangling projects including Geoq, an open source mapping workflow tool, Congress.gov remake, and Top Secret America. A Great Mentor for the Beginning Wrangler

I pre-ordered this book a couple of months ago and anxiously waited for it to arrive. Data wrangling is the largest part of most any inquiry, the actual data analysis is usually nothing compared to getting the data into a usable form. I was really looking forward to having a reference, and at first I was disappointed with this book. It is directed at the non-programmer and begins with the simplest python skills. It does not use any of the advanced data structures or modules that I have used in the past. Even though I just did not get much out of it, I still had to give it five stars!

First and foremost, it is well written: the grammar and punctuation are correct, the example code and explanations are clear and insightful. Most computer books are agonizing to read, but this was a joy. Although it does not provide comprehensive examples of all the modules and data structures, which one might use in data wrangling, it does provide an example for each type of data you might want to import: CSV, JSON, XML, Excel and PDF. Plus there are chapters on using web scraping, APIs, and both Relational and NoSQL databases. Moreover, each example is explained with a step-by-step narrative, that shows the beginner not just how to do it, but how to think about working through the process. This is why I recommended the book to colleague, who is an atmospheric scientist learning to program with python.

Barely includes anything on NumPy, nothing on Pandas - doesn't seem like it would be useful for actually 'wrangling data'

I bought this book expecting that it would at least contain some information on NumPy and Pandas - but these aren't covered in detail at all. I'm not sure why you would try to 'wrangle data' with python without using NumPy. There is a very similar book (with almost the same title) published by O'reilly that is written by the author of Pandas (Wes McKinney). I assumed that this was an update to that book because the titles were so similar - but that wasn't the case at all. The other book covers both NumPy and Pandas. Returning this one...

There is a lot of great information and examples in this book. What makes it stand out is that they are understandable. You won't get lost in the details like some books. This is all the work that we do every day, laid out in plain language.

The Martian is an original and highly entertaining science FICTION novel. I doubt that it was intended to be read as a chemistry primer or treatsie on Mars' meteorological conditions.

The trade in oil, gas, gems, metals and rare earth minerals wreaks havoc in Africa. During the years when Brazil, India, China and the other “emerging markets” have transformed their economies, Africa’s resource states remained tethered to the bottom of the industrial supply chain. While Africa accounts for about 30 per cent of the world’s reserves of hydrocarbons and minerals and 14 per cent of the world’s population, its share of global manufacturing stood in 2011 exactly where it stood in 2000: at 1 percent.

In his first book, The Looting Machine, Tom Burgis exposes the truth about the African development miracle: for the resource states, it's a mirage. The oil, copper, diamonds, gold and coltan deposits attract a global network of traders, bankers, corporate extractors and investors who combine with venal political cabals to loot the states' value. And the vagaries of resource-dependent economies could pitch Africa’s new middle class back into destitution just as quickly as they climbed out of it. The ground beneath their feet is as precarious as a Congolese mine shaft; their prosperity could spill away like crude from a busted pipeline.

This catastrophic social disintegration is not merely a continuation of Africa’s past as a colonial victim. The looting now is accelerating as never before. As global demand for Africa’s resources rises, a handful of Africans are becoming legitimately rich but the vast majority, like the continent as a whole, is being fleeced. Outsiders tend to think of Africa as a great drain of philanthropy. But look more closely at the resource industry and the relationship between Africa and the rest of the world looks rather different. In 2010, fuel and mineral exports from Africa were worth $333 billion, more than seven times the value of the aid that went in the opposite direction. But who received the money? For every Frenchwoman who dies in childbirth, 100 die in Niger alone, the former French colony whose uranium fuels France’s nuclear reactors. In petro-states like Angola three-quarters of government revenue comes from oil. The government is not funded by the people, and as result it is not beholden to them. A score of African countries whose economies depend on resources are rentier states; their people are largely serfs. The resource curse is not merely some unfortunate economic phenomenon, the product of an intangible force. What is happening in Africa’s resource states is systematic looting. Like its victims, its beneficiaries have names.

A brilliant analysis of why corruption is widespread in many African countries

Misconceptions abound in the public perception of corruption in Africa. Tom Burgis’ incisive new analysis of corruption on the continent, The Looting Machine, dispels these dangerous myths.

For starters, corruption is mistakenly believed to reign supreme in every country on the African continent. (There are 48 nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a combined population of more than 800 million.) Of course, it’s true that some African countries rank very low on Transparency International’s “Corruption Perceptions Index” (CPI) — after all, Somalia merits the very lowest score, with Sudan and South Sudan not far above it — but only Eritrea and Guinea-Bissau rank at all close to them. In between them are many other countries: Middle Eastern, Central Asian, Caribbean, South Asian. And three Sub-Saharan African nations rank in the top third of the 175 countries in the CPI: Lesotho, Namibia, and Rwanda, with Ghana close behind. Ghana scores better than Greece, Italy, and several other European nations.

Second, corruption in Africa is viewed as intractable. It’s widely believed that nothing can be done about it. Nonsense! One of the largest and most potent sources of the cash that fuels corruption is foreign aid. Institutions like the World Bank, USAID, and other national and international agencies direct most, if not all, their support to governments. This, despite the obvious evidence on the ground that a huge proportion of this aid goes straight into the pockets of the ruling elites. If foreign aid were doled out more selectively to community-based organizations, local agencies, and NGOs with grassroots operations, the picture might be very different. As things stand, only a trickle of foreign aid gets to the people who need it most: the poor.

Lastly, and most significantly, too many observers characterize African corruption as a uniquely African phenomenon that grows out of ethnic rivalries and the failure of European colonists to establish stable native governments. Those factors, while present, are only part of the story. Equally, if not more, consequential is the role of foreign investment — principally from China, the US, and Western Europe — in exploiting the continent’s abundant resources, often paying through the nose for the privilege. Corruption is a two-way street: briber and bribee need each other. And those Western investors include some of the world’s biggest US- and European-based multinational corporations — most prominently, Big Oil and the major mining companies. Chinese companies are even worse because they’re not constrained by legal restrictions at home. Prominent foreign aid cheerleaders like Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University do the African people no favors by advocating huge increases in official aid, rationalizing that some of it will actually do good. Just ask the first ten Africans you meet on the street in Lagos or Nairobi or Luanda. Unless you happen to run into a member of the privileged elite, you’ll get an earful about Western-enabled corruption.

The Looting Machine spotlights this two-way street, with an emphasis on commerce. The role of foreign aid receives little attention. The principal source of corruption in Africa, Burgis contends again and again, is its wealth of natural resources: oil, gas, gold, diamonds, copper, iron, and many other materials essential to the rich nations’ consumer economies. Citing an analysis by McKinsey, he reports that “69 percent of people in extreme poverty live in countries where oil, gas, and minerals play a dominant role in the economy and that average incomes in those countries are overwhelmingly below the global average.” This is one of the most tragic consequences of what economists refer to as the “resource curse.” Burgis asserts that “An economy based on a central pot of resource revenue is a recipe for ‘big man’ politics.”

It’s no accident that the resource curse finds its fullest expression in Africa: the continent accounts for 13 percent of the world’s population and just 2 percent of its cumulative gross domestic product, but it is the repository of 15 percent of the planet’s crude oil reserves, 40 percent of its gold, and 80 percent of its platinum — and that is probably an underestimate.”

The scope of the corruption this cornucopia of resources makes possible is difficult to comprehend. For example, “When the International Monetary Fund examined Angola’s national accounts in 2011, it found that between 2007 and 2010 $32 billion had gone missing.” That’s billion with a “B.” And this, in a country of just 21 million people — a population roughly equivalent to that of Sao Paulo, Seoul, or Mumbai.

Interesting and Informative Good resource on corruption by Powers that Be

Clear, dense and informative. Author provides interesting first hand information of corporate
executives, government personnel and middle men/women involved in corruption of contracts
for resources between governments, companies and their cronies and the devastation they
wreak with looting the masses in African countries. Although with his journalism background
he is no sociologist or political scientist, he tries to draw parallels between countries on
the strategies and dynamics that maintain the hoarding of wealth to the detriment of the
majority who produce it.

Great introduction.

This is a very small text, which covers the subject in great depth. It is not light reading, rather a serious explanation of the physiology, including an overview of the mathematics and chemistry. A great book.

I'm a respiratory doc with teaching responsibilities. I have had a copy of West since the second edition. Many, if not all of my pulmonary physiology lectures have been based on this text, and West was a key to my education as a medical student, resident, and fellow. The current edition, with some clinical correlation included, is a good improvement.

Pulmonary physiology is hard and not entirely intuitive, especially ventilation perfusion matching. This book does a good job of introducing the naive reader to these concepts. Highly recommend.
