Middle-to-low quality book for newbies searching for an easy staring point on the transformers' field
By borda_g
The book contain some insight on power transformers and reactors but most of its content can be found, in more detailed explanation, on other sources. For sure it gives at least a list of every aspect in the industry (even air core reactors are mentioned, which are usually left out) but more often then not in a very superficial and not meaningful way; also, the basic information is repeated several times in different chapters. One time would be enough and would have spared some space for some more basic analysis of the listed aspects.

Some examples:
Short-circuit inductance calculation doesn't mention rogowsky coefficient (!!!)
Chapter 24 (short-circuit) is pointless (e.g.: you have to correctly design the pressure ring, the frame, etc... without giving any any formula or even design parameters)
Final chapters (25 and above) are meaningless.

Anyway the quality is quite constant (on the low end) throughout most of the chapters thanks to the editing team but some chapters suffers from more "dumbed down" source material then others (the do/no not list of the bushing chapter seems directly addressed at low skilled workers in a third world country, not to the reader of a engineering book...). Some parts are more of an advertising for BHEL but it may be understood as it's sold from them (same can be said on "Short-circuit strength of power transformers" by Giorgio Bertagnolli on ABB favor).
Pictures are very low quality and definitely not significant to add any kind of value.
Overall 2 out of 5

If you are looking for a good book on transformers there are better options like "Transformer Engineering: Design, Technology, and Diagnostics" by S.V. Kulkarni, S.A. Khaparde or "Transformer Design Principles: With Applications to Core-Form Power Transformers" by M. Del Vecchio et al.

Dennis Nilsen, by Russ Coffey

In February 1983, civil servant Dennis Nilsen was arrested after body parts were found to be blocking drains at the house where he lived. As the squad car drove him away, he confessed he had strangled 15 young men. But it wasn’t just the crimes that stunned the police, but the way Nilsen spoke. He said he loved the young men he killed. When newspapers carried stories of how the 37-year-old lured men back to his flat and why, the nation was shocked by his sheer evil. Yet some psychiatrists considered him a man of rare, complex, and extreme psychological problems. In addition, none of them had met a killer who seemed so keen to understand his own psyche. Whilst on remand in Brixton Prison, Nilsen filled 55 exercise books with thoughts. During his subsequent30 years in prison he has continued to write—most notably on the first draft of a multi-volume autobiography—which the Home Office has banned. Using exclusive access to Nilsen's writing and extensive independent research, Russ Coffey explains what Nilsen says and how much of it we can believe. This is a shocking glimpse into the mind of a killer.

Girl in Translation, by Jean Kwok

Introducing a fresh, exciting new voice, an inspiring debut about a Chinese immigrant girl forced to choose between two worlds and two futures.

When Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate from Hong Kong to Brooklyn squalor, she quickly begins a secret double life: exceptional schoolgirl during the day, Chinatown sweatshop worker in the evenings. Disguising the more difficult truths of her life-like the staggering degree of her poverty, the weight of her family's future resting on her shoulders, or her secret love for a factory boy who shares none of her talent or ambition-Kimberly learns to constantly translate not just her language but herself back and forth between the worlds she straddles.

Through Kimberly's story, author Jean Kwok, who also emigrated from Hong Kong as a young girl, brings to the page the lives of countless immigrants who are caught between the pressure to succeed in America, their duty to their family, and their own personal desires, exposing a world that we rarely hear about. Written in an indelible voice that dramatizes the tensions of an immigrant girl growing up between two cultures, surrounded by a language and world only half understood,Girl in Translationis an unforgettable and classic American immigrant novel—a moving tale of hardship and triumph, heartbreak and love, and all that gets lost in translation.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This audiobook is the perfect match of narrator and material. Grayce Wey's performance as immigrant Kimberly Chang feels absolutely authentic. As the adult Kimberly looking back at her life, Wey has just a touch of a Chinese accent (appropriate for a character who's lived in America for two decades), and her tone conveys bittersweet regret even while knowing she made the right choice. But when speaking as the younger, newly arrived Kimberly, Wey's Chinese accent is much heavier, and we can hear Kimberly's confusion, anxiety, and struggle to adjust to this new culture. Wey perfectly evokes Kimberly's growing assertiveness and determination, her teenage longing, joy, and pain when falling in love for the first time, and her conflicted feelings when making difficult decisions about her path in life. A moving and memorable listen. A Riverhead hardcover (Reviews, Mar. 15).

unsure at first..
By sun2008
I had some ambivalence about this book at first, and mostly read it out of curiosity because it received such great reviews. The ambivalence was due to similarities between my own life and the character's - I am Asian, I immigrated to the US when I was thirteen, my previously well educated and professional parents became rough laborers, we were poor, I strugged with language and assimilation, and went on to two Ivy Leagues. So I thought: what can this book possibly tell me? Should there be such books to further the stereotype of the Chinese immigrant, who came to the U.S. poverty stricken and struggle to become doctors and lawyers? I chose to read it for two reasons: curiosity, and the fact that the author gave up science to become a writer and obtain and MFA - not very Chinese. I realized she must have had guts to risk the more certain path of a structured profession, for a career in writing. So I gave it a go. In the end, I do have to admit that I am probably a biased reader. Having had first hand experiences quite similar to the character's, there were times when I broke down while reading the book. It uncovered a lot of wounds and shame that I thought had gone away. I relived many painful moments which had been forgotten or buried away, and reminded me of who I was. Again, I realize this comes from a very specific perspective, but for having reacquainted me with an old sad self, I give it five stars.

The immigrant experience through young Chinese eyes - a story about hope, persistence, and dedication
By AlexJouJou
Girl in Translation is a coming of age story that intertwines what it means to be an immigrant with the values of family, a sense of duty, and hope for the future. Kimberly and her mother find themselves in New York looking for a better future than the life they'd known in Hong Kong. They are, unfortunately, at the mercy of Kimberly's aunt and uncle as they are quite indebted to them for arranging green cards and for taking care of medical bills for Kimberly's mom (who has had TB) as well as paying for their accommodations to New York.

When the story starts Kimberly is a middle school age girl who speaks and reads some English but not enough to create any real level of understanding of her surroundings. Her mother speaks almost no English. They've just arrived and their mother's sister (herself with a story that I won't spoil) has arranged an apartment and a job. The apartment is a heat-less, roach and rodent infested slum tenancy, and the job working at a sweatshop making pennies for long hours. The Chinese culture is front and center here and it is interesting to understand why Kimberly and her mom would agree to these conditions. The sense of duty, of obligation, runs strong - and they have very little other options and no choices. It certainly brought me back to stories my grandparents talked about as immigrants themselves and how they arrived in America and the struggles they faced. I think many of us have lost this sense of our past, of the struggles of our ancestors and how it really was when you arrived at Ellis Island (or how it could be)

As time passes they manage by making noises to frighten the various other non human tenants of their apartment and tape garbage bags to the broken window panes. Various people enter their life but they keep very much to themselves, afraid of what others would think if they knew the true situation. At first Kimberly struggles in school with her limited English skills but she soon picks things up and shows herself to be the star student she was back in Hong Kong for science and math.

Meanwhile both she and her mom work in the sweatshop for the pittance they get paid. Their life is undeniably hard and there is a marked contrast between the way things are for them and what Kimberly sees in school. The scenes in the sweatshop are particularly disturbing and it is unsettling to say the least to know that this type of thing exists not only in the USA but all over the world.

As high school approaches Kimberly receives a scholarship to an exclusive private school. All is not perfect though as there is such a contrast between her impoverished life and the immaculate and sprawling landscaped school grounds and beautiful buildings. It is really the first time Kimberly feels that she can escape the life she's been living and sets the stage for the choices she will make for the future.

As Kimberly tries to balance the demands of a top notch private school with her work both at the school and at her aunt and uncles sweatshop one of the boys there becomes Kimberly's friend, later destined to be something else. To see how a young boy can grow up in that environment and struggle and work towards a better future is heartwarming.

Just when you think you know what will happen the ending has a huge twist. I won't spoil it other than to say I almost cried.

I adored this book. It was comfortable and, in spite of the tragic content in places, the author did a wonderful job of making you feel it without spending your reading time in abject misery. The characters are extremely rich and vibrant and interesting. The world introduced feels as foreign as China to me and it is hard, as I've noted, to reconcile the fact that this type of thing happens all the time within the America I grew up in.

I also really enjoyed the Chinese sayings interspersed throughout the book. Instead of saying you are ungrateful you say "your heart has no roots". Although Kimberly struggled with learning this "Chinese" (what was being said indirectly or in a different way) I really enjoyed it. It is a part of the culture that is so different than the direct American way.

Girl in Translation flows smoothly and Kimberly ages as you press on, waiting to see what will happen, where she will end up, and if she can escape her situation and have a bright future. As bright as she is was my hope for her. An enlightening story with an interesting cast. Highly recommended!

Entertaining but not as deep as it could've been
By booksandbliss
I enjoyed the story and I did finish it with some feeling of attachment to the main character.

Having said that, I think the author treated the adolescent immigrant experience a bit too superficially for the story to have been truly satisfying. I compare the story to Curtis Sittenfeld's Prep, another 1st person autobiographical but fictional account of a teenager trying to fit into a "foreign" culture, and Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone, and wish that Girl in Translation could've read as deeply as those two books. I also write this with personal knowledge of the Chinese immigrant experience - my mother too worked in a garment factory and we lived in a roach-infested apartment, had to rely on doing well in school to get out of poverty, etc. - but I didn't feel that this story captured the deeper issues that come along with growing up in such an environment. The book focused too much on the poverty (way too many descriptions of the cold apartment and roaches and rats) and Kimberly's academic performance. When I was growing up I struggled alot with identity issues (cultural; familial (my role in the family since as a child I was given adult responsibility)), idealism (the painfully disappointing realization that my life was different from that of my American friends), a sense of not belonging anywhere (feeling neither Chinese nor American), resentment against my parents, the very people who were sacrificing for me (for being expected to be the adult, for being pushed to excel at school without emotional support) and guilt (for wanting freedom, hating my life, not respecting my parents (because I started to look down on them for needing me), wanting to be American), etc. The issues that immigrant children and teens face are ENORMOUS and complex and the book didn't really touch on these themes.

So, without the necessary depth, this story became, to me anyway, another story of an Asian American "whiz kid" - the kid who comes to the US with little or no English and money and then rises to the top academically and professionally.

THE FRENCH CATHOLIC “THOMIST” PHILOSOPHER LOOKS AT POLITICAL ISSUES
By Steven H Propp
Jacques Maritain (1882-1973) was a French philosopher who converted to Catholicism in 1906; he was known as a prominent "neo-Thomist." He wrote many books, such as Natural Law: Reflections On Theory & Practice, An Introduction to Philosophy, Scholasticism and Politics, A Preface to Metaphysics, On the Use of Philosophy, 3 Reformers: Luther Descartes Rousseau, The Social and Political Philosophy of Jacques Maritain, etc.

[NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 219-page paperback edition.]

He wrote in the “Acknowledgment” section of this 1951 book, “The book is the outgrowth of six lectures given in December 1949 under the auspices of the Charles R. Walgreen Foundation for the Study of American Institutions.”

He wrote in the first chapter, “The State is not the supreme incarnation of the Idea, as Hegel believed; the State is not a kind of collective superman; the State is but an agency entitled to use power and coercion; and made up of experts and specialists in public order and welfare, an instrument in the service of man. Putting man at the service of that instrument is political perversion. The human person as an individual is for the body politic and the body politic is for the human person as a person. But man is by no means for the State. The State is for man.” (Pg. 13)

He suggests, “So perhaps it will be possible, in a pluralistically organized body politic, to make the State into a topmost agency concerned only with the final supervision of the achievements of institutions born out of freedom, whose free interplay expressed the vitality of a society integrally just in its basic structures.” (Pg. 23) But later, he clarifies, “genuine Sovereignty can by no means be ascribed to the State. The State is not and has never been genuinely sovereign.” (Pg. 43) He adds, “In the spiritual sphere there is a valid concept of Sovereignty. God, the separate Whole, is Sovereign over the created world. According to the Catholic faith, the Pope, in his capacity of vicar of Christ, is sovereign over the Church.” (Pg. 49)

He comments on Gandhi: “there is quite another order of means, of which Western civilization is hardly aware, and which offers the human mind an infinite field of discovery---the spiritual means systematically applied to the temporal realm, a striking example of which has been Gandhi’s … ‘means of spiritual warfare.’ … In my opinion, Gandhi’s theory and technique should be related to and clarified by the Thomistic notion that the principal act of the virtue of fortitude is not the act of attacking, but that of enduring, bearing, suffering with constancy.” (Pg. 68-69)

He observes, “there is, by the very virtue of human nature, an order or a disposition which human reason can discover and according to which human reason can discover and according to which the human will must act to attune itself to the essential and necessary ends of the human being. The unwritten law, or natural law, is nothing more than that.” (Pg. 86)

He argues, “For a philosophy which recognizes Fact alone, the notion of Value---I mean Value objectively true in itself---is not conceivable. How, then, can one claim rights if one does not believe in values? If the affirmation of the intrinsic value and dignity of man is nonsense, the affirmation of the natural rights of man is nonsense also.” (Pg. 97)

He points out, “Nineteenth century bourgeois democracy was NEUTRAL even with regard to freedom Just as is had no common good, it has no real common thought… it had become a society without any idea of itself and without faith in itself, without any COMMON FAITH which could enable it to resist disintegration. But the all-important point to be noted here is that this faith and inspiration, and the concept of itself which democracy needs---all these do not belong to the order of religious creed and eternal life, but to the temporal or secular order of earthly life, but to the temporal or secular order of earthly life, of culture or civilization. The ‘faith’ in question is a CIVIC or SECULAR faith, not a religious one. Nor is it that philosophic substitute for religious faith, that adherence forced upon all by reason’s demonstrations, which the [18th and 19th] century philosophers sought in vain.” (Pg. 110)

He notes, “From the advent of Christianity on, religion has been taken out of the hands of the State; the terrestrial and national frameworks in which the spiritual was confined have been shattered; its universality together with its freedom have been manifested in full bloom. Nay more, how could that universality of the Church be manifested except as a token of her superiority?” (Pg. 152)

He summarizes, “man is a member both of the body politic and, if he adheres to the Church, of that supra-temporal society which is the Church. He would be cut in two if his temporal membership were cut off from his spiritual membership… the Christian political society which we are discussing would be aware of the fact that Christian truths and incentives and the inspiration of the Gospel… are the very soul, inner strength, and spiritual stronghold of democracy… a Christian democracy… must, under penalty of disintegration, keep alive in itself the Christian sense of human dignity and human equality, of justice and freedom. For the political society really and vitally Christian which we are contemplating, the suppression of any actual contact and connection, that is, of any mutual help, between the Church and the body politic would simply spell suicide.” (Pg. 176-177)

He asserts, ”the condemnation of theological liberalism by the Catholic Church will never be amended. This is because the theological liberalism implied the false philosophy of the absolute metaphysical autonomy of human reason and will. It made the so-called ‘modern liberties’ absolute and limitless to such an extent that man’s obligations either toward truth or toward the common good simply vanished away.” (Pg. 180)

This book will be “must reading” for anyone interested in the political implications of Maritain’s philosophy.
