Finally, people trump process. Every process book should probably include this standard disclaimer:

Process is only a second-order effect. The unique people, their feelings, qualities, and communication are more influential.Some problems are just hard, some people are just difficult. These methods are not salvation. Software Is New Product Development

Consider building mobile phones on an assembly line: It is possible to unambiguously define the specifications and construction steps. After building some phones and measuring things, it is possible to reliably estimate and schedule the building of future phones.

A different problem: Build a custom house. The owner wants to use new environmentally friendly materials and methods, but isn't exactly sure what they want, and is going to change or clarify their decisions as they see the house, costs, and weeks unfold.

At one end of the spectrum, such as manufacturing phones, there are problems with low degrees of novelty or change, and high rates of repeated identical or near-identical creation—mass manufacturing or predictable manufacturing.

At the other end, there are problems with high degrees of novelty, creativity, and change, and no previous identical cases from which to derive estimates or schedules. This is the realm of new product development or inventive projects.

The development process, management values, planning and estimation models appropriately associated with these two domains are different (Table 1.1).

Of course, the point is,

Most software is not a predictable or mass manufacturing problem. Software development is new product development.

Plus, many projects use new and buggy technologies that exacerbate the degree of novelty and unpredictability. Note also it is a new product for the inexperienced even if it has been done before.

Since predictable manufacturing is the wrong paradigm for software, practices and values rooted in it are not helpful.

This mismatch lies at the heart of many of the challenges associated with traditional approaches to running a software project.A "waterfall" lifecycle, big up-front specifications, estimates, and speculative plans applicable to predictable manufacturing have been misapplied to software projects, a domain of inventive, high-change, high-novelty work.

Factors CP86 preventing reliable up-front specifications include:

The clients or users are not sure what they want.
They have difficulty stating all they want and know.
Many details of what they want will only be revealed during development.
The details are overwhelmingly complex for people.
As they see the product develop, they change their minds.
External forces (such as a competitor's product or service) lead to changes or enhancements in requests.

This deep appreciation—that building software is complex, new product development with high change rates, and not predictable manufacturing—is at the heart of the motivation for agile and iterative methods.

Certainly, another driving force is the desire to compete and win. Iterative and agile methods foster flexibility and maneuverability—a competitive advantage. In Agile Competitors and Virtual Organizations GNP97 the authors examine the limitations of the mass manufacturing model and the need for agility:

Agility ... is about succeeding and about winning: about succeeding in emerging competitive arenas, and about winning profits, market share, and customers in the very center of the competitive storms many companies now fear. What's Next?

The next two chapters summarize basic practices and ideas of iterative, evolutionary, and agile methods. After that, a story chapter illustrates these practices with a concrete scenario.

Adios Waterfall

Yes, indeed, Finally. Abundant proof in one book that the traditional waterfall approach is a terrible way to manage software projects, and is therefore slowly being displaced by agile and iterative approaches. Larman does a devastatingly thorough job of debunking waterfall once and for all.
The book cogently and painstakingly explains how several of waterfall's practices have been conclusively linked to project failures, and how, on the other hand, the practices of Agile and iterative methods like Scrum and XP reduce project risk. Larman summarizes research findings encompassing thousands of projects, and quotes the supporting opinions of standards bodies and industry thought-leaders. The net effect is compelling, to say the least.
If you are an Agile skeptic, this book may rattle your conviction. If you are fence-sitter, it may convince you. And if you already have Agile fire in the belly, then certainly this book will stoke that fire. After reading it, I am left wondering how intelligent, experienced software development management can justify the continued use of a process that has wasted so much money and caused so much pain.

Excellent survey of iterative and incremental development (IID) methodologies

This work by Larman shares some commonalities with Balancing Agility and Discipline, a work by Boehm and Turner (see my review for that book) in which a wide range of methodologies are compared side-by-side to determine the best fit for teams. However, rather than serving as a guide to determine best fit from a wide assortment of methodologies, Larman's work is limited to a discussion of Scrum, XP, Unified Process (i.e. RUP/UP), and Evo, within the broader context of what the author categories as iterative and incremental development (IID). In my opinion, this book is probably the best organized text on this subject currently available in the marketplace. Although the subtitle for this work categorizes itself as a manager's guide, the content Larman has included here will prove beneficial for anyone involved in software development. And this is the case even if one does not read the four methodology-specific chapters. After a thorough explanation of iterative and evolutionary development, the author discusses its relationship to agile development and the motivation behind adopting such methodologies. The subsequent chapter on the evidence behind the effectiveness of IID is the most concise listing of research findings I have come across. While this chapter begins with a warning that "exhaustive data can make for exhaustive reading" and that it is "probably best spot-read as a reference", at only about 30 pages in length it is well recommended. While many in technology recognize the benefits of IID and have used the ideas brought to the table by various IID methodologies to some extent, the author reminds the reader that not only do many technology shops simply remain paralyzed by waterfall methods that view software as a predictive process, but that IID has been around for decades. David L. Parnas, a software engineering pioneer who developed the concept of module design, is quoted by Larman as follows. "Q: What are the most exciting, promising software engineering ideas or techniques on the horizon? A: I don't think that the most promising ideas are on the horizon. They are already here and have been for years, but are not being used properly." I found the following sections within the specific methodology discussions to be especially beneficial: common mistakes and misunderstandings (or how to fail with a particular methodology), signs that one has not understood a particular methodology, sample projects, process mixtures, and adoption strategies. In addition, the reader might be interested in knowing that the last chapter consists solely of questions and answers summarizing many of the main discussions presented elsewhere in the preceding eleven chapters, serving as a quick reference by pointing to specific portions of the text where ideas are elaborated upon.

I found this to be an excellent review to the topic of agile development. It methodically covers Scrum, XP, UP and Evo, and unlike other computer books, provides detailed references and a bibliography, so you can see how the author got to his conclusions.

About the Author
Phong Thong Dang holds a sixth degree black belt in Aikido, a sixth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a fifth degree black belt in Judo, and an eighth degree black belt in Vietnamese Shaolin Kung Fu. The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame inducted Phong twice: once for his expertise in Aikido and again for his lifelong dedication to the martial arts. He has been featured in Karate Illustrated, Aikido Journal, Aikido Today magazine, Martial Arts and Combat Sports, and Black Belt. He has been in the martial arts for over fifty years and currently teaches in southern California.

A very well laid out and objective book...

This book does a very good job of explaining its title subject... basic Aikido. There are no politics or style-specific posturings here; only solid basic information in an easy-to-read format. Look also for two recently released titles by the same authors: "Advanced Aikido" and "Aikido Weapons Techniques".

The best basics book Ive read.........

This is a clear, very well written and thorough "basics" book. What I was looking for was a book that clearly explained basic concepts I could pass on to children and beginning adults. What I found was an enjoable book that not only helps me teach but refreshes my memory on concepts I have learned from many sources over many years. One clear source for those concepts we never out grow or over practice.

A good complementary reference...

for anyone attending an Aikido class. There are many aspects to attending a class other than learning Aikido techniques and those "other" aspects are well covered in this book. The writing is clear and direct and so makes extracting the point quick and easy.
There are also various branches of Aikido, and so styles differ, but the basic set of techniques are similar and so the descriptions of the techniques in this book are helpful for connecting the technique name with a set of physical movements. One thing I'd caution the reader about is that you should not expect to learn Aikido from a book. There are more incorrect ways to apply a technique than you can imagine, so having an instructor who is knowledgeable and patient there to observe and correct your application of Aikido is essential.
But, overall, as a book for beginning Aikido, this book is a good reference.

Soldier/Police officer whose been training off David Kahn's system for 4 years

I have served in the military for 16 years and law enforcement for eight. I have a background in martial arts and was a combatives instructor for two years. I personally witnessed standard training methods fail one of my buddies. He was taught to simply create distance and use firearms tactics. These methods didn't provide an adequate response in the heat of an edged weapon attack. Krav Maga is by far the best self-defense system due to its simplistic and practical nature. No other self-defense training is so effective and so simple at the same time. I have many times used elements from Krav Maga to fill gaps in the combatives curriculums I have had to instruct. When I first sought out Krav Maga training I found that there were many local places that seem to just teach ground and pound in there studio and call it Krav Maga. After researching the internet, I found that these local studios were far removed from the actual system itself. After seeking out the backstory on the system I found David's books and DVDs. Imi Lichtenfeld developed Krav Maga back in the 40s and passed the baton to Grandmaster Haim Gidon. Grandmaster Gidon is currently the highest ranking member of the IKMA. David Kahn was trained by Grandmaster Gidon. The curriculum taught in these books is straight from the source and untainted by pop culture. The great thing about these books and DVDs is that, with five books and four volumes of DVDs, there is way more than enough material to become an effective Kravist. With the right level of motivation and attention to detail you can be ready for any situation. I would recommend at least purchasing a gorilla pad, punching bag or finding a buddy to train with to make things easier. With that said, even without any equipment the techniques remain simple and effective. Your brain will retain what you practice by way of shadow boxing and visualization. The price of self-defense can be outrageous, and you rarely know what you've bought until you sign a contract. At $15 to $25 dollars a book you're not exactly throwing away money and you'll be totally satisfied. The best thing about it is you can train when you have time. You don't have to rush to get to class, or, even worse, sign a contract with some dojo you never have time to make it to. I don't make promises often, but, I promise if you buy the first book in the series you'll be stunned by the common sense approach to this system. Safe for me to say, before you know it you'll be buying everything David has to offer.

It works

I have studied various martial arts for years. I was fortunate enough to have had an instructor early on whose primary focus was practical self-defense, in other words, what would actually work in a street fight, mugging, ambush, etc. The techniques in this book are the same I have learned over the years. They are practical, and they work. The thing about this book I was happiest to see was the instructor's admission that: in a fight, you're going to get hit/hurt, possibly more than once, and that you must defend yourself to the best of your ability while striving to end the fight as quickly as you can with the appropriate amount of force (you're not going to immediately gouge the eyes out of some drunk who's a little overly friendly in a bar, but you may need to if he follows you out and tries to rape you). I also like the fact that he has included reality: it may take several blows from you before your attacker succumbs. Don't just hit a man once in the throat; hit him as many times as you safely can. Overall a good read, and if you can remember and apply these techniques in a crisis situation you're ahead of the game, but it still doesn't take the place of taking a class in a martial art and feeling what it's like, under controlled conditions, to actually block someone's strike, grapple with them, punch back, etc. But remember and apply these techniques if necessary, and this book very well could save your life.

EXCELLENT READ AND VERY ADDICTING

As everybody has learned by now, I am a true YA Paranormal fan, but from time to time, you can find me venturing out of my comfort zone and diving into other genres…….

Well, I have once again devoured another phenomenal read by this amazing author. It took me six hours straight, non stop reading, but it has taken me twenty-four hours to gather my thoughts to write this review. I needed time to wrap my brain around the turn of events that happened in this story. Now, I still don’t have my brain wrapped completely around it, but I am ready to share my opinion on this book.

This book starts off where the ending of book two left us, full of raw emotions and completely in shock. I love how the author started off this book. I was hooked, of course, from the very first sentence. This book is full of raw emotions, and yet the main character just keeps chugging through and keeping it together.

Farris
Farris is a strong willed girl, who is smart and sassy, but also quite broken. I actually could feel the feelings of this character pour off the pages and into my mind. I felt as if I was actually the character and not a shadow of the character. This is a very lovable character and no matter what this author did to this character, she stayed strong and made sure her feelings never slipped, and above all, she tried to keep people safe. It’s a lot of the shoulders of a seventeen year old with an old soul.

The story line
The author was spot on with the title for this book. It’s all about the Digital Horizon and how it all works. The author really did her homework while writing this story and I give her a standing ovation for her hard work in bringing this story to life. Of course, we are left with another cliffhanger and I am sure the next book will be just as thrilling as this one was. We met new characters and old in this story, which made this story extremely interesting to read. I really haven’t known of this author for very long, but she is very good at twisting a story and keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole thing. I am very anxious to read more from this author in the months to come. This author has shown all her blood, sweat, and tears in this book and has opened us up to a whole new world, that we behind the scenes, didn’t know really existed. I highly recommend you read this series and get ready to have your mind blown!! I have never in my whole life read anything so mind blowing, spine tingling, edge of your seat writing like this before!!

I give this book my five book review, though this book does deserve more than that!! My proverbial hat goes off to the and this remarkably well written story!!

Decent plot and writing, best of the three

More plot and a little fewer relationships than the first two books in the series. The balance was good; still on the fluffy side but the tech was a bit more realistic than the other books as well. Still no tech details; it's all hand-wavy but sticks at least in part to somewhat realistic stuff. The action is a little contrived but the suspension of disbelief was easy enough and I read it straight through in about 2.5 hours.

It's kind of nice to read through a YA series after reading several Mark Russinovich and Ian Sutherland thrillers. They're longer and more twisted. This is short and to the point...one major plot focus, a drive to the action and climax and a bit of an epilogue including a hook for the next book (that's not out yet). Nice and simple, but fun. Less meandering than the first two as well. A pop fiction YA tech thriller :-)

See, NOW we’re talking. This is what I’ve been waiting for-the story to fill the Eye Candy shaped hole in my heart from when MTV canceled my awesome hacker show. I loved Digital Horizon, especially since Farris is into the real hacking at this point, finding herself working for the government to find the people responsible for the terrible attack at the end of the last book. We meet a fabulous new cast of characters, relive old trauma, run into an old enemy, and keep secrets through the entire book. Ahh, young love and secrets. I definitely messaged one of my friends several times while reading to tell her that I was impressed with how much the excitement picked up throughout the story. This is definitely the book I have been waiting for in this series. I highly recommend! Can’t wait until book four.

I read the full description before preordering!

Well, since unlike everyone else who has left a review, I actually READ the full description before preordering, this box set was exactly what I expected. This set contains Tales of Beatle The Bard and Quidditch through the ages in beautiful hard back covers contained in a sturdy, wonderfully designed box set. I bought both books when they originally released and made the decision to rebuy them in the form of this box set due to presentation. I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED. Please do not be like the other reviewers, and give this fabulous set a bad review simply because you make a erroneous judgment to not read the full description. This is a great set for any collector or lover of books!

The Hogwarts Classicis beautifully bound. It actually looks like one book, but when you turn it around it holds two books, Tales of Beedle the Bard and Quidditch Through the Ages. If you are a JK Rowling fan you will be pleased to own this little gem.

About the Author

Bill Nye is a scientist, engineer, comedian, and inventor. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University where he studied under Carl Sagan, and worked on the 747 as an engineer at Boeing before creating and hosting his much-loved Emmy award-winning PBS/Discovery Channel show Bill Nye the Science Guy. He holds six Honorary Doctorate degrees from Lehigh University, Willamette University, Quinnipiac University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College, and Johns Hopkins, and teaches at Cornell regularly as a visiting professor.

Corey S. Powell is the former editor in chief of American Scientist and Discover, where he is currently editor at large and continues to write the "Out There" column and blog. He is also a visiting scholar at NYU's SHERP science journalism program, as well as a freelance writer for Popular Science, Smithsonian, Nautilus, and Aeon; his article "The Madness of the Planets" appears in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2014. "Undeniable" is in outstanding book in defense of science and the grand theory of evolution. It's a love of science and his quest to spread awareness of the ways evolution impacts our lives and what is at stake for all of us. Mechanical engineer, science educator, and Emmy award-winning TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy provides readers with a gem. This enjoyable 320-page book includes thirty-seven chapters that cover a wide-range of topics pertaining to evolution.

Positives:
1. Entertaining, well-written and well-researched book for the masses.
2. A great topic, the grand theory of evolution and how it shapes our lives.
3. A charming and engaging tone throughout.
4. This book oozes of love for science and the admiration for one of the greatest theories ever devised. "Evolution is one of the most powerful and important ideas ever developed in the history of science. It describes all of life on Earth."
5. Bill Nye is an educator at heart and he is concerned for the well-being of our planet. This sentiment shines through clearly as the following statement illustrates when discussing the attack on reason. "This attack on reason is an attack on all of us. Children who accept this ludicrous perspective will find themselves opposed to progress. They will become society's burdens rather than its producers, a prospect that I find very troubling."
6. Debunks many lies portrayed by creationists, like the second law of thermodynamics. "The Second Law applies only to closed systems, like a cylinder in a car engine, and Earth is not even remotely a closed system. Transfers of matter and energy are constantly taking place. Life here is nothing like a perpetual motion machine, but neither is it like a ball rolling inexorably downhill."
7. Does a wonderful job of describing how evolution works. "Nature is self-organizing. That's another way of defining evolution: Nature builds ecosystems, in all of their complex glory, from the bottom up."
8. Keeps even the most complex topics accessible for the public. As an example provides an enlightening chapter on how to determine deep time. "It's just a little over a century since the French physicist Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity, and with it the key to unlocking deep time."
9. A very good explanation on why the inheritance of acquired traits was wrong and what Lamarck actually got right. "Evolution happens as each generation of living things interacts with its environment and reproduces. Lamarck got at least that part of it right. Those natural designs that survive to reproduce pass on their genes. Those that don't successfully reproduce disappear; their genes disappear as well. It's survival of the hang-in-there's, or the made-the-cuts, or the just good-enoughs."
10. An interesting and even humorous look at sexual selection.
11. A look at artificial selection. "Darwin coined the phrase `artificial selection' to describe what human gardeners, farmers, and horse and dog breeders had been doing for centuries: creating better or more useful varieties of animals and plants."
12. Provocative but never disrespectful. "How can you take the lack of evidence of a plan as evidence of a plan? That makes no sense."
13. A fascinating look at biodiversity. "The areas of Earth with the most energy input are also the areas with the most biodiversity."
14. Explains why most living things never get fossilized.
15. A look at mass extinctions. "Industrial emissions are one way humans are changing this planet, but not the only way. We are also directly killing countless species at a rate that dwarfs the rates estimated in the previous Big Five extinctions. We are killing them mostly by destroying their habitats."
16. Geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky's influence. "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution."
17. Many examples of poor "design". "Your windpipe (trachea) is right next to your food tube (esophagus), making it easy to choke. What's up with that? Couldn't that have been improved?"
18. Does a commendable job of explaining micro versus macro evolution. "The processes of microevolution and macroevolution are fundamentally the same, only the scale is different."
19. Many examples of the importance of understanding evolution. "For instance, we've discovered that cancer evolves. Cancer cells can mutate in the body of a patient, so that malignant cells find new ways to get a supply of blood and become resistant to our anticancer drugs."
20. An excellent chapter on genetically modified foods. It's one of my favorites. "So for me, evolutionary theory informs our decisions about GMOs."
21. A great chapter on skin colors. "In general, the closer people live to the equator, the more ultraviolet exposure they receive and the darker their average skin color."
22. Much more...

Negatives:
1. There are more substantive books on evolution (see my further recommendations) but few as charming and enjoyable to read.
2. A few sketches but overall lacking in visual content (graphs, timelines, and diagrams).
3. No notes.
4. No formal bibliography.

In summary, this is a wonderful book on the grand theory of evolution. Inspired by a debate with creationist Ken Ham, Bill Nye the Science Guy takes the reader on a delightful journey through popular topics concerning evolution and along the way teaches us the importance in understanding it. A tad on the accessible side of the equation but a wonderful book nonetheless. I highly recommend it!

Review from a former Jehovah's Witness

I was born into the Jehovah's Witness religion. I had twenty-nine brain washing indoctrinating years until one day I woke up and somehow saw "the matrix" for what it was and started thinking rationally while questioning the religions references and methods. I finally came to the realization that my religion was a cult. I am now thirty-four years old. In the short time that I have walked away from that "Faith", I decided to go to college and pursue degrees in things that always interested me. In a short sporadic 2.5 years, I attained an Associate's and Bachelor's degree while raising a family. This is a big no-no in that religion. Jehovah's Witnesses look down on education and even though they don't say you can't go to college, every time it is brought up it is in a bad light and described as a worldly place where bad association exists. College is for lovers of money and the greedy. Some go for two years for a technical degree which is almost shameful to other members.....if you go for four years...OH MY, you are never coming back!

Jehovah's Witness are taught to believe that EVERYTHING in the bible is to be taken literally. They even have their own book promoting Creationism titled, "Life--How Did It Get Here? By Evolution or by Creation?" The liberties, lies, and misquotes the religion took when writing this book are mind baffling. Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Darwin and many more were grossly misinterpreted many times to make the organizations case for creationism look correct. All it takes is a quick google search to find the references to these atrocities.

In the time I have been out of organized religion, I have opened my mind and have been trying to seek answers that do not rely on faith but on concrete evidence. What I have learned in the last four years is astonishing. I now have a greater respect for my life, others, and all of my surroundings.

Bill Nye is an advocate for educating the young (and old), and we need more like him. Today's youth will eventually be making the big decisions that will affect the future of our planet. In my opinion, Mr. Nye's book is a great stepping stone to help others that might have been in similar shoes as me. It takes information that is sometimes hard to process and hones it enough that anyone "nine to ninety" can learn the basics of why creationism is laughable. Nye does it in a way that is heartfelt and nonjudgmental. I wanted to thank Mr. Nye for taking on this touchy subject and giving believers in creationism a healthy dose of SCIENCE!

10 Years Out of Date and Somewhat Patronizing

Pros: VERY easy to read. Written and perhaps a sixth grade level. Nye is friendly and likable. Hats off to his editor who did a great job.

Cons: Seems unable to resist taking repeated swipes at Ken Ham and Creationists, as though that's the only group of people in the world who take issue with various aspects of Darwinism. Makes misleading caricatures of evolution skeptics. Perhaps one shouldn't expect any different.

However the real problem with this is book is that Nye's version of evolution pretends as though the last 30 years of microbiology simply never happened at all. The version of evolution he espouses in this book has been obsolete for at least ten years.

He has a chapter about Lamarck in which he criticizes the 19th century scientist for being wrong about progeny inheriting acquired characteristics from their parents - but he only mentions epigenetics once and he never informs the reader that epigenetics has now vindicated Lamarck! (Look it up.)

Either 1) he doesn't know this, or 2) he belongs to the group of old-school Neo-Darwinists who are still holding out, hoping epigenetics will somehow go away. (Dawkins in his book disdains epigenetics, claiming that it's merely enjoying "15 minutes of fame.")

To Nye's credit, he does not advocate the now-dead Junk DNA theory. (On the other hand, neither does he point out that the Junk DNA theory has been overturned. No mention of the ENCODE project.)

He says evolutionary mutations come from "imperfect copying of the DNA strand." We now know this is false, and that evolutionary mutations are changes induced by the cell itself in response to signals from the environment.

There is no mention of the amazing error checking and error correction systems in cells. No mention of transposition (cells re-arranging their DNA) or symbiogenesis (cells inside of cells in cooperative partnership).

He has a chapter about how bacteria adapt to antibiotics - but no mention of horizontal gene transfer, and there's no real explanation of how this happens.

Which is to say he's given you virtually zero education about how evolutionary adaptations actually work. I'm surprised that a mechanical engineer would virtually ignore all the physical mechanisms of evolutionary change.

Meh. All in all a very surface level treatment of a topic that deserves better.
