This book is intended to teach you to learn and remember the Korean writing alphabet. This alphabet is called Hangul, and has been heralded by some to be one of the most scientific writing systems in use today. However, since it varies greatly from the English alphabet, it can appear daunting at first and traditional methods for learning and remembering it are boring and time consuming. If you follow the steps set forth in this book, you will accomplish this task, and you will do it in only 1 hour. 1 hour of concentrated study on the ideas set forth in this book.

I am not a Korean language teacher in the formal sense, but I have spent a good deal of time studying the Korean language as well as a smattering of time on a couple of other languages. I wrote this book in response to the frustrations I've seen from those who were struggling to learn Korean but were doing it by following romanized versions of the words. I hate to see time and talent wasted, and to me, that is just what that kind of study is, a waste. If you're in Korea, you will see very little romanization (or other English spelling representations). Outside of road signs and a few restaurant menus, Hangul is the prevalent method for writing Korean, and it is well worth the time it takes to learn and remember it. Also, once you have mastered the alphabet, you will be surprised at how many things you are able to understand, especially since there are a great deal of foreign words in use in Korea but represented in Hangul and with a slightly different pronunciation. If you truly want to learn Korean, then learning Hangul is the first and most sensible step.

This book will teach you to do this, learning on your own or in a group. Chinese characters are also used to represent the Korean language, but it is becoming less and less used though it still appears in newspaper headlines and many Koreans' name or business cards. This book won't be dealing with those characters. You will also need to continue your usage of your new found knowledge in order to permanently ingrain it into your memory and apply this knowledge to acquiring vocabulary. I am sure you will find this book helpful in starting you on the path to a wonderful experience with your study of Korean or stay in Korea.

About the Author
Allen Williams grew up in southern Illinois then spent several years roaming around the western half of the U.S. After moving to Western Kentucky to finish college and later earning his M.A., he spent 6 years, living, working, and studying in South Korea. He earned a Ph.D in literature from Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea. He has a 1st Degree black belt in Taekwondo, certified by the Kookiwon in Seoul. He is currently living, working, and writing in Nagoya, Japan with his wife and two sons. they share their time between Korea and Japan.

Super useful, not to be used on it's own though

This book was very useful in finding ways to remember Korean letters. I bought this book along with another that was a "Korean for beginners", using them both together helped even more. This book helps you identify the letter, the other one helped me in pronunciation. Also, if you're looking to be learning similar to how I am (on your own, not in a classroom setting and not in Korea) I'd recommend getting a buddy who is Korean who can help you along the way.

Also, this book was very fun and had some comical quirks in it. It definitely made learning the language enjoyable!

All-in-all, this is a highly recommended book!

This Was a Life Saver

First of all, I'm terrible at learning languages. I bought this book before going on a work assignment to South Korea for a couple months. However, I didn't even open the book until I'd been in Korea for three weeks - I was just SO intimidated by the language.

I felt so lost, I finally gave it a shot and read this book during three 20-minute sessions on the subways in Seoul. The written world around me suddenly came alive! It's not like I instantly became fluent or anything, but at least I could read subway and bus signs, routes, and maps. It was definitely the most helpful, time-effective resource in being able to physically navigate South Korea on my own. I wish I'd read it earlier!

Helpful and fun

I liked this book. I found the memory devices very helpful for remembering the shape of characters. I also liked that it demonstrated how to properly write the character. Yes, I did learn it in an hour. I had to look elsewhere for the special rules of letter placement and pronunciation, but overall I enjoyed going through this book and seeing how quickly I picked up a foreign writing system.

Disappointed. Very good book overall

Disappointed. Very good book overall, but the title is pretty misleading. This doesn't even begin with the Ninth Doctor who rebooted the series. It's all 10, 11, and 12. Good content, certainly. Talks about their enemies and companions. I had hoped for something encompassing the series- at least the whole of the new series, but also had hoped for the original portion to be represented as well. A good book, to be sure. But know it's not as expanded as you might hope.

My kids love this and it's always at arm's reach when watching Doctor Who

This and the Character Encyclopedia seem to be in constant motion as my kids pass them from to the other when we watch an episode. The illustrations are big and clear and the explanatory text is quite informative, especially given its conciseness.

It seems reasonable to expect self-help books to accomplish one of three goals: to explain behavior, to assist readers to develop their potential or to change unwanted behavior patterns, or to motivate readers. This book fails on all three counts. People who may be attracted to the concept have probably already realized that their relationship with a self-absorbed parent has caused problems, and they will not learn much else. The suggestions for change are too general to be useful, and the tone is at times spiteful and depressing. Susan Forward and Buck Craig's Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life (Bantam, 1989) covers the same topic in a more positive and helpful fashion. Not recommended.

A sober study by a clinical psychologist of the destructive legacy that narcissistic parents bequeath to their children and the troubling characteristics those children share as adults. Narcissists behave, Golomb says, as if they are the center of the universe, organizing their lives around denial of negative feelings about themselves. Their children, forced to conform to parental thinking, grow up with a range of subtle emotional disabilities, most commonly a distorted view of their capacities. All too frequently this damaged sense of self-worth interferes with their search for autonomy, their performance, and with their other adult relationships. Golomb, child of a narcissistic father, gives examples from the lives of friends and patients, as well as from her own experiences, and shows how these strained views of reality can be passed along from one generation to the next or can shadow an entire family's happiness. She is particularly adept in discussing why some people persist in the most puzzling behaviors (bankrolling one lover after another, for example) and how they see and defend these patterns. Although Golomb has experimented with meditation techniques and group treatment, she finds psychoanalytic psychotherapy the most consistently helpful set of strategies and suggests ways for adults to approach narcissistic parents and to change the nature of these relationships. ``Narcissism is a tale of codependency,'' she observes. ``If we want to be treated in a different way, the change in treatment must start with how we present ourselves to [narcissists].'' Golomb writes in language more accessible to other therapists than to general readers, unleavened by humor, and without a specific agenda. About the Author
Elan Golomb is a graduate of Bennington College and earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and her certificate in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy from New York University. She has been in private practice in New York since 1972.

Written with understanding and compassion

Her writing style was easily understood. Some of the examples were too personalized. Her general observations and insights were helpful. Unfortunately like many of these books it stopped short in the healing realm or how to heal. It is easy to identify narcissistic family traits and that as adults the symptoms of suffering. It is much harder to write about healing which this book barely addresses. Your feelings will be validated but that is as far as it goes.

This book changed my life! Knowing that I am the child of a narcissist (and probably one as well), helped me truly face my past and help create a positive future. There are so many pearls of wisdom in this book and the stories told are so helpful.

I like to underline interested sentences when I read. Every page in this book has many sentences underlined!

About the Author
Michael Knapp has taught undergraduate and graduate auditing courses for more than thirty years. He has developed numerous online CPE courses that focus on a wide range of auditing topics, including the COSO internal control framework, the most common types of accounting frauds, and the impact cognitive biases have on the quality of professional audit services. Professor Knapp has also testified in several major litigation cases involving accounting and auditing issues. For three years, he served as a consultant with the FBI on a major white collar criminal case. Recently, he accepted an invitation from the FBI to speak at a national conference attended by more than 500 FBI agents and other federal law enforcement officers. His honors at the University of Oklahoma include, among many others, the Harold E. Hackler Outstanding MBA Professor (determined by a vote of OU's MBA students), the Outstanding Oklahoma Accounting Educator (awarded by the Oklahoma Society of CPAs), the Delta Sigma Pi Professor of the Year (awarded by the OU undergraduate business students' honor society), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (a university-wide designation for teaching excellence awarded to one professor annually), and the McLaughlin Chair in Business Ethics.

My textbook arrived on time but when I opened the ...

My textbook arrived on time but when I opened the text I discovered that the pages are tearing away from the binding. It otherwise appears used and pages are worn but no writing on them and are acceptable. My biggest issue is the binding breaking apart and I've only used it one time so I worry if it will make it through the semester.

Great read

Easy, simple read. But very valuable for the beginner woodworker; those just beginning to amass their tool collection. It's got techniques for cutting joineries as well as sharpening your hand tools. So I learned quite a bit as a beginning woodworker. I didn't give 5 stars because he has a lot of power tools that I can't apply to my woodworking, i.e. jointer and planer. I can't afford those, so I try to work with the things I have.

Great book Marc

This book pointed out the dichotomy of the old vs the new. Use a pencil or a pen, a notebook or a laptop, an mp3 player or a record.

The beauty lies between the gap, where you find yourself most comfortable.

That being said, there were a lot of good techniques to take home. I work in a niche woodworking market, and I really enjoy taking breaks from time to time to just build some furniture.

I was inspired by this book, and I'll be in my shop tomorrow dreaming of furniture that I'll make in the future.

I love the wood whisperer website

I love the wood whisperer website. He does such a great job at breaking down projects and tools. This book is for BEGINNERS! So if you are looking something more advanced I'd skip this book. But for a newb to woodworking like myself (probably even a more intermediate woodworker who is getting back into it) this book is perfect. It's premise is simple, how do I combine hand tools and power tools? Enjoy the book, the website, and the podcast.
